Louis Armstrong was once asked "What is Jazz?" A little confused about the question, Louis answered, "Man, if you gotta ask you'll never know." But you know you've heard it before. Jazz surrounds every part of the our musak filled days. These three hours are filled with the jazy, bluesy sounds that have reined you in over the years — with a little indie to wake you up. Join your host August as he walks you through the music that's floated around you.

[Rein In August hosted by August, airs every Monday from 10 pm to 1 am only on CJLO!]

Twitter Away

We're always trying to find new ways to get people to hear us on CJLO.com. This time we started a twitter page to talk about what we are listening to over the week and what is going on live during the show.

So look for us and our insights on August @ Twitter

Back From NXNE

We're back from NXNE and we've got a hankering for some music to wake up your Monday night. Listen up & get down, this week as we highlight some of the bands we saw at the indie festival mixed in with the usual — and unusual — jazz and blues.

Off, Off Festival

Festival season has started and it’s landed big time in Montreal. The newest – although it’s been around for 8 years – is the Off Festival de Jazz. 170 musicians in 35 concerts sounds like a lot but they are varied and well-planned. The shows are from June 22nd to July 1st at three venues downtown, Pub St Ciboire, Lion D’Or and O Patro Vys.

The prices range from $15 for the 9:30 pm show to $25 for two shows, starting at 8 pm and 9:30. The 5 pm and 11 pm shows are free, free, free. Check out www.lofffestivaldejazz.com for the complete line-up.

Under the Stars of Jazz

No sooner do the crooners hit the airwaves that a bit of inspiration comes my way. So to celebrate the opening song of this week's Rein In August -- Paolo Conte's Sotto le Stelle del Jazz -- I've put together a drink recipe to savour along side the juicy tunes of the upcoming, long summer days.

Italianito

1 teaspoon powdered sugar
Juice from 1 lime (2 ounces)
4 mint leaves

1 sprig of mint
Limoncello (2 ounces)
2 ounces club soda

Place the mint leaves into a long mojito glass (or a "collins" glass) and squeeze the juice from a cut lime over it.
Add the powdered sugar, then gently smash the mint into the lime juice and sugar with a muddler (a long wooden impliment, though you can also use the back of a fork or spoon if one isn't available).
Add ice (preferably crushed) then add the limoncello and stir, and top off with the club soda. Garnish with a mint sprig.
