Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott requested an emergency meeting with the Canadian government with Indigenous leaders and child welfare experts on Tuesday.
According to CBC News, the disproportionate number of Indigenous children taken from their families and put into the child welfare system has created a serious humanitarian crisis.
Surveys have found that there are 11,000 children in Manitoba's child welfare system and 10,000 of them are Indigenous children.
Philpott stated that the way in which Canada is currently taking Indigenous children away from their families is extremely reminiscent of our country's horrific residential school system.
