Vancouver first city to approve cigarette butt recycling project

Vancouver has introduced a pilot program designed to turn cigarette waste into profits.

According to CBC, one hundred and ten containers built for cigarette butt disposal have been installed in Vancouver's downtown area. The cigarette butts collected in these containers will be gathered by employees of United We Can.

The waste will then be recycled by TerraCycle Canada and made into industrial plastics and resold for profit.

A representative of TerraCycle said they are planning to bring the program to other major cities.

A previous pilot project aiming to clean cigarette butts off the streets existed, but it was shut down for not being cost-effective.
