CJLO Fee Levy - CSU Elections 2011

On November 29th, 30th and December 1st, 2011,
Get Heard Downtown! Say YES to CJLO!

During this year's CSU elections, CJLO is asking for the support of Concordia undergraduate students by voting yes to a 9-cent per-credit, per-semester, fee levy increase to begin the purchase of an FM signal for the downtown area.

We are YOUR voice on campus! Help it be heard by voting YES for CJLO!

The Question :

Do you agree to apply a fee levy increase of 9 cents per credit to the existing fee levy of 25 cents per credit for a total fee levy of 34 cents per credit, applicable to all undergraduate students, where the fee shall be used to ensure the growth and sustainability of CJLO, 1690 AM, Concordia University Radio? ... The fee increase would be effective starting with the fall semester of the 2011-2012 academic year and refundable in accordance with Concordia University tuition and refund policy.

Why Does CJLO Need Your Vote?

With Increased Support CJLO Plans To:

  • Begin the process of applying for a small FM frequency downtown. This includes the hiring of a consultant, development and implementation of a survey and application for the license.
  • Start an expansion fund to move the station forward as these plans develop and pay for upkeep at our antenna site.
  • Purchase recording equipment for students now that the university has limited equipment rentals to those taking courses.
  • Increase campus and community outreach, promotion, support for student projects and training opportunities
  • Strengthen core staff including the hiring of a campus outreach and volunteer coordinator to help to meet the needs of students and groups on campus
  • Become less dependent on paid advertising so as to ensure that free advertising for student clubs and groups is always available.

What Our Student Members Have to Say:

"When I first came to Concordia, I was always shyly interested in helping out at the radio station, and it took a lot of prodding from my friends to finally fill out an application during tabling in the Mez one day. Since then, it's become a huge part of my life and sometimes I feel like it's giving me a better education for working in media than my actual program. There are so many areas of a radio station that students can help out with, and I'm constantly amazed at the training, event services, studio use, advertising, etc. that are available to students at no cost and how dedicated everyone at the station is to protecting that model instead of relying on commercial advertising. Apart from the music we play, the station itself is a great place to hang out, meet people, and be part of something that helps your fellow students."

- Kayleigh Jordan-MacGregor, Undergraduate Student, Communications, CJLO's Campus Outreach Coordinator

"CJLO is the best outlet for student involvement at Concordia. For me, it has been an open, fun environment and a great place to make friends while learning the ropes of radio communication, sound recording, musical history and the benefits of being involved in a community atmosphere. For pursuing a career in both marketing and music, it has taught me how put together a proper show, how to record ads and conduct interviews, and the initiatives one can take in terms of public promotion. For any student, no matter what field of interest, CJLO has something to offer."

- Victoria Watson, Undergraduate Student and Host of CJLO's Spirit of Punk

"Being at CJLO has opened up many new and exciting opportunities for myself since joining the station last year.  As a Political Science student there aren't many opportunities to get out of the class room and to be involved with media.  This was a great chance to be exposed to radio and to be apart of a community on campus that provides remarkable services for Concordia students.   CJLO has given me quite valuable experiences in radio broadcasting (being on air) something I absolutely love, as well as doing show reviews, and the chance to be involved quite frequently with Concordia students.  I had no experience in radio when I first joined the station, but they've worked with me from day one to help me build skills that I will undoubtedly use for many years to come.  I encourage anyone interested in radio to come check the station because we've got something to offer for everyone."
