Trust Abby: Book Reviews

Every month I’m going to post mini blurbs/summaries about books I’ve recently read AND I’m going to tell you why you should read them too, all in the most interesting, non-preachy, non-educative way possible. Also, since this we are a music station, not only will you be learning about some amazing literature but you’ll gain music knowledge too. How? Each novel gets its very own soundtrack! So take a look and listen. I recommend you listen to the soundtracks as you read the reviews.

Igloofest: Week 1 Recap

That time of year is upon us; it’s Igloofest time! This is the time where all electronic music lovers gather at the Old Port to enjoy the hottest artists from the scene. Until January 28th, Igloofest will play host to the biggest outdoor party in North America, with a spectacular lineup for this year’s edition.

This Week in Sports: January 18th

NHL:

While there were a few noteworthy stories in the National Hockey League this past week, none were as big as the news of Mike Cammalleri getting shipped to the Calgary Flames for winger Rene Bourque.

The Black Keys

I'll admit, it was difficult for me to begin writing this review. It's hard to take a stance on an album so incredibly mediocre. El Camino starts off promising, but quickly fades into forgettable background music. The first three tracks, “Lonely Boy,” “Dead and Gone,” and “Gold on the Ceiling,” are the most memorable tracks on the album. “Lonely Boy,” in particular, has a catchy guitar riff and background vocals that compliment the chorus and give the song depth.

Best of 2011

Happy New Years! There's a fresh, exciting year ahead of us, but we here at CJLO want to take this chance to look back at 2011 and all the wonderful things it's offered. Our DJs and volunteers have taken the time to gather lists of their favourite music related things from this past year. The lists are as diverse as the musical selection we offer. Check them out and you might find something new and interesting.

The Street Dogs + Off With Their Heads + Murder the Stout + The Prowlers @ Foufounes Electriques

I remember finishing many a week as a bike courier at Foufs on a Friday night with one too many beers. The gates in front of the bar were littered with various bikes in various states of disrepair, and the tables inside were littered with bike helmets, courier bags, and empty glasses. With that in mind, I was amazed to realize that this was the first time I’ve actually seen a live show there.

Chris Velan @ Petit Cafe Campus

It was homecoming for Montreal’s own Chris Velan on Thursday, December 8th; he rocked out for a crowd of about 50 at Petit Café Campus for the first time in over a year. “I will never do that again,” vowed Velan about being away from his hometown for so long, and I hope he keeps his word.
