Check out “My Home", the first single from Nneka’s next solo offering, Soul Is Heavy. Respective albums have earned Nneka the moniker of 21st Century Soul for their sincerity and frankness and this, her third album, is no different. Featuring guest collaborations with The Roots’ Black Thought (‘God Knows Why’) and Ms. Dynamite (‘Sleep’) Soul Is Heavy available in stores on February 28, 2012 further affirms her credentials as a fast-rising star of black-consciousness music.

I first heard The Tea Party in 1993 when my high school friend Sheila bought me their album Spendor Solis. It was open when she handed it to me; "I already listened to it and didn't like it very much," she told me. Having already heard "The River," I thought my fate would be different.

It was instant. I felt a connection to the album similar to when I first heard my dad's...

I had such a great time djing for the EARTH NIGHT Pasa Musik Mtl Tour with Eh Dave! & Kebeko that I was inspired to make an AIR element mix for the upcoming WIND NIGHT this Saturday, Nov 26th at Café l'Artère 7000 avenue du Parc (Montreal) with KEBEKO & JjANICE!!

Basically I made this mix on the spot (after 4 attempts). It incorporates all things that remind me of AIR: vocals, breath, horns, flutes, and guitar. Guitar? You ask. To me there is something about the guitar that has a feeling of flying. Maybe it's the desert wind that pulls the light-weight guitar chords across the Sahara.

In this mix we travel to India, South Africa x2, Thailand, Mali, Belgium, Haiti, South Africa, Mozambique, and Cuba respectively.

I hope you like it. xo Kelly aka Sugarface Nene...

Dallas, Texas-based psychobilly trio The Reverend Horton Heat were recently back in Montreal and back in my jukebox! With 9 albums and 25 years of greasy, grimy, guitar lickin', bad-ass upright bass whippin', and dirty drum kickin' music under their belt, The Reverend Horton Heat kept the crowd rockin'.

The Reverend (aka Jim Heath) on guitar and vocals was a tall stack of a man in his fine 1950's vintage suit and shirt...

February Celebrates Black History!  Although it's a celebration of black history every month on Beat The World, this month had a special focus on SELF. Self love. Self empowerment.  Taking care of yourself/myself/oneself.  It actually came to be unintentionally.  Maybe because February is a time of deep reflection. Maybe because we look at out past. And when i mean our past, I mean the world's past.  We are people of the world. We must celebrate ourselves. Be proud of who you are.  More importantly respect for oneself.  I didnt realize this month would mean so many things to me compared to previous Februarys or previous months in general.  Maybe because its my 30th year or maybe because its Daphne's birthday on the 29th (we gonna celebrate...

Kelly from 'Beat The World' here to say a big MABRUK/CONGRATULATIONS to all the Egyptians and Egypt supporters during these difficult yet exciting times of protest against the 30 year reign dictatorship of (ex-president as of today, Feb 11th, 2011), Hosni Mubarak.  Many of you have witnessed, on TV and especially on the net, the ongoing protests of the Egyptian people all around the world for the last 18 days. Today we got the news that Mubarak has officially stepped down.  No more yelling only rejoicing! The sticks once holding up signs with the words "Mubarak Get Out" are now used as bellydance dancing sticks and for beating the darbuka drum! This protest was called a "revolution".  It has also been called "a reason to fight".  What ever the...

Sultry, seductive and infused with that inimitable samba swing, the music of Luisa Maita embodies the modern spirit of Brazil. Inspired by the bustling urban life foind in her native city of Sao Paulo, Lero-Lero has a contemporary vibe with influences from alternative pop and downtempo electronic music melded with an acoustic foundation deeply rooted in samba and bossa nova. Hailing from a country overflowing with musical talent, Luisa Maita rises above the fray as one of the most promising young singers of her generation.

Live interview with Luisa Maita Saturday, Nov 6th at 12:...

Gregory Isaacs — one of the most popular and versatile reggae singers of the late-Seventies, and the smooth-voiced dancehall crooner behind the genre's landmark 1982 LP Night Nurse — passed away this morning at his London home following a year-long battle with lung cancer, the BBC reports. Isaacs was 59. "Gregory was well loved by everyone, his fans and his family, and he worked really hard to make sure he delivered the music they loved and enjoyed," Isaacs' wife Linda said. "He will be greatly missed by his family and friends."

Over the course of his prolific career — in which...

Saturday, October 2nd on "Beat The World" was the Montreal multi-talented artists and 2010 Gémeaux award winner, Pierre André Desautels.  He shared with us his knowledge of Santeria and selected tracks of his impressive collection of afro-cuban rhythms.  It was such a success that we decided to continue with an Afro-Brasilian special, hopefully sometime soon.

Here is a video link to a great afro-cuban group, Yoruba Andabo.

Haha.  Finally, some of you might say, on facebook.  But frankly i'm a little scared of this worldwideweb, although I really shouldn't be.  So, i decided to take the advise of my fellow radio peers and set up a group page for "Beat The World" on facebook.  I must admit, it is starting to look pretty good and im enjoying this new found form of expression.  I was so used to using music to express myself I almost forgot how to write.  I just turned 30, which has nothing to do with anything except that I feel ready for this world and I guess that means ready to take on facebook.  Thank you for joining me on this journey. http://www....

PEACHES and I Feel CREAM in my pants:

After a long day at the office, I was on my way to meet my lady friend Daphne for a night of “the teaches of” the foul-mouthed, feminist, electro-clash, costume changing, shock rapper-rocker, Peaches.

As we walked into the show room, we could hear the crowd buzzing with anticipation.  To my dismay, Amanda Blank had already performed but I could tell the time for Peaches was near.  Suddenly, the lights dimmed.  There was a silence...
