Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark are back on North American soil for the first time, with their original line-up, since 1988. I had the chance to catch the tour's second show, at Le National on Sunday March 6th 2011. I need to state something: this was kind of a special show for me to see because I actually saw them on their last tour here; yes, I am talking about the 1988 tour.
Let me bring you back there with me.... OMD was the supporting act for ...
Monday January 24th 2011, "With Gay Abandon" will be featuring a session with Montréal-based solo drone artist Les Beyond. Listen in from 2-4 right here on CJLO 1690 AM www.cjlo.com
While Les Beyond initially began in late 2007 as a solo outlet for her softer-side, the then-guitarist of Shearing Pinx, Erin Ward, soon found that what began as just bedroom antics over time has solidified into a hypnotic and transfixing soulscape. Using seemingly simple tools, she subtly and deftly takes the audiences to private places with her trance-inducing guitar drones, covering full spectrums and invoking dark paradises.

I recently got a sneak preview on a new short being featured in Montreal's “Image + Nation” film festival. It was entitled “Fourplay:San Francisco,” and was the first of four shorts based on true experiences of sexual intimacy. Fourplay:San Francisco is the first release of this series, making its way through the LGBTQ film festivals. This cute short will leave you wanting more, and I look forward to the day when all four are screened in one viewing.
The story is about a trans sex worker hired for a challenging job, and how she makes her way through the awkwardness of her mission to discover...

Metropolis played host to the enigmatic and powerful Blonde Redhead on October 16th. I have to admit that I am not a Blonde Redhead head but the week preceding the show I grabbed some of their old albums and was jonesing for the show by the time Saturday night rolled around. Their sound can be compared to other riot girl acts like Vivian Girls or Ciccone Youth. The opener, Pantha du Prince, warmed the crowd with a bouncy house set riddled with noise-ish samples, lit by strategically-situated...

I cannot believe I was oblivious to this collective until last night! Chicks on Speed, who stem from Munich, stormed into Montreal, apparently much too late. Fans of this DIY/electroclash/punk group’s previous work told me that they were huge about 7 years ago with the hit “Wordy Rappinghood”, which just made me grin from ear to ear. The general opinion, though, seemed to be that going to see this show was more like caving in to a bout of nostalgia then being spurred on by knowledge of Chicks on Speed’s recent work.

Montreal's Les Beyond has been described by audiences as the “musical equivalent of a food coma.” That description might throw you off and make you think “is that a good thing?” And the answer is “YES!”
Using an array of pedals and a guitar, Les Beyond adds layers of soft guitar murmurs, creating a drone soundscape so captivating that it transfixes you, and before you know it, her set is over, people around you begin to stir, and then you realize – the musical equivalent of a food coma has just enveloped you like a tryptophan-laced aural wave of hypnosis.
After relocating from Vancouver, and leaving her main band of the last six years, Shearing...

Do you ever lie awake, dreaming of the early '90s, while listening to the likes of Sleater-Kinney, Bratmobile, Heavens to Betsy or Bikini Kill? Do you reminisce back to your Doc Marten days when Doc Martens made their first fashion resurgence? Do you ever wonder what life would be like if the Riot Grrrl scene didn't disintegrate (albeit, many rad things have been birthed by this action – like Ladyfest, and Girls Rock Camp...)? Do you ever think about what happened...

THE REVIEW:
Club Lambi, on a Wednesday evening... Mild- mannered crowd fills the room, gingerly sipping their cosmos and making small talk. Suddenly, the lights dim and a video clip kicks in.... '80s spandex and headbands fills the screen... French cut unitards perfect thigh raises in uncanny synchronicity.... All the while a bangin' dance beat begins to fill the room.... Then, two amazingly outfitted dancers hit the stage, warming up the audience's gaze for the forthcoming glamour of Leslie Hall. Out of nowhere, Leslie appears, like a...

Leslie: Thank you for having me on your radio show! I really hope that this is hilarious.
Julie: [laughing] I'm sure it will be.
L: Yes!
J: Okay first! What about your name, Leslie & The Lys. Is there a special meaning behind that?
L: Um, there is a meaning that, “I'm going to give a band a name and then the band is not going to go anywhere so I'll change it later”, well that didn't turn out to be the case. Clearly I gave it a name. It...
