Despite the temperature reaching -33 degrees Celsius, Metropolis was packed with hip hop heads ready for J Cole.

The show started on time, which is always a plus for me when I go to hip hop shows. Dreamville artist and rapper Bas took the stage, perfomring tracks off of his mixtape Quarter Water Raised Me, and he really got the crowd hyped and ready for J Cole. I liked his tracks and will be...

DJ Mana broke out on the scene in 1993 at the young age of 13 DJing House music at parties. Seeing his friends scratching on the turntables brought out his competitive side, so he started competing in DJ battles such as the DMC, ITF, KoolMix, and Vestax just to name a few. In 2007 he retired from battling and opened a DJ school for those who aspire to be grand wizards on the turn tables. During this time, he started producing beats working on little bits here, and now he has come up with his first of three EPs to be released...

Aloe Blacc
Aloe Blacc (Photo: Unknown)

In spite of the rain, the final day at Osheaga was certainly the best day of the festival! First up was the soulful Aloe Blacc. He performed tracks from his album Good Things, including "Green "Lights" and "I Need Dollar." Even though he only had 40 minutes, Aloe really put on a good show and left a strong impression on me. The best part was when he sang "You Make Me Smile," which had everyone in the crowd give their friends a hug.

Kaytradamus
Kaytradamus (Photo: Nick Leger)

The second day of Osheaga was "Tweelime Day" since Stephanie from Twee Time was with me at the festival (the lime is from my show The Limelight, get it?). I met her at Scene Verte where the Aggrolites were performing cover songs, including ska and raggae. They were a fun band. We moved on and I hit the Piknic Electronik stage where Kaytradamus was DJing...

Amadou and Mariam
Amadou & Mariam (Photo: Pat Beaudry)

Once I arrived at Parc Jean Drapeau, I picked up my media pass and immediately made my way to Scene de la Montagne to see Amadou & Mariam, the blind couple from Mali. Their sound is traditional Mali music with a rock-blues influence. Amadou is a great guitarist, and Mariam has a beautiful voice that immediately captures you when she sings. She also had a cute little groove. The entire band was full of energy,...

Osheaga 2012

The Osheaga Music & Arts Festival begins this Friday, August 3 at Parc Jean Drapeau, and lasts throughout the weekend! I'm very excited to be attending not only because it's my first time, but because there are quite a few acts I'm looking forward to seeing.

My festival picks include Swedish electronic group Little Dragon, fronted by Yukumi Nagano...

Native Tongue  This Saturday The Limelight we’ll be paying to tribute to the  Native Tongue Family.

This Hip Hop collective consisted of Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest & De La Soul, Leaders Of The New School, Queen Latifah, Monie Love & Chi Ali. Later on there were peripheral members such as Towa Tei, J Dilla, Prince Paul, Brand Nubian, Punchline & Wordsworth

The Native Tongue had an impact on the style and trend of Hip Hop during the Golden Age.

Ok so I’m going to say something that may cause some controversy. Some of y’all may even be thinking “Lady Oracle what the hell you talking about?”

Montreal is filled with a lot of talent and this of course includes female talent. There are some bigger name female singers/ hip hop artist/ spoken word artists who are working hard at their craft and getting a lot of shine for it. If you look at these ladies resumes you can’t help but be impressed. The funny thing is when I mention these ladies to certain people, they follow it up with negative comments like “oh she’s too much, she thinks she all dat, she ain’t all dat” Some of them have some...

On Sunday February 1st 2003 at 6pm two Hip Hop lovers joined forces on live internet broadcast to play songs that you don't hear on mainstream radio or on popular music channels. The show didn't even have a name (we were actually given some wack name and it was put under the world music genre). We temporarily went with "The Lounge" and finally J-Nice named it "The Limelight". I went from being The Black Oracle to Lady Oracle (thanks to Musiq Soulchild) & we moved from Sunday at 6pm to Saturday at 4pm following some great shows like Ear Exam with Darcy MacDonald, The Dirty Rap Hour with Chris Coates, Beat The World with Sugarface Nene.

Now we air live on AM radio Saturdays at 6pm following More Fyah radio with Junior Vibes, Singing P and Star Q. Soon we'll be on the FM band...

Be sure to tune into The Limelight this Saturday January 7th for the best of 2011.  We'll be playing the songs that sonically pleased J-Nice and myself. As a treat we've posted one of our favorite tracks for you all.  It's Masta Ace and  Doom with the track PBS, rhyming about the darker side of Sesame Street, track is hilarious and if you can't imagine Elmo as a gangster I posted a pic for a visual. Enjoy and see you in The Limelight

Prince

This Friday Prince graced us with his enigmatic presence & amazing music at the Bell Centre. I was lucky enough to get tickets to see the show for my birthday and I couldn't have asked for a better present.

The stage was the shape of the infamous male, female, alchemic soapstone symbol that lit up along the edges. The show started with the New Power Generation coming out and jamming for a bit then the backup singers. Finally Prince himself came out dressed in a long sleeve graphic tee, tight pants and white boots with fur all sparkling and gleaming.

For the next three hours Prince performed his hits, funk tracks, and a...

I just saw the documentary today so as soon as I walked through the door I decided to share my thoughts with you while it's fresh in my mind.

Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest directed by Michael Rappaport documents the journey of A Tribe Called Quest from their sweet beginning, their success and the bitter end with commentary from artist/producers/DJs such as DJ Red Alert, Pharell Williams, Quest Love to name a few.

The four members Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed, & Jarobi White discuss their journey with the group, how they got started, influences etc......

Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings is kicking off a new tour and her first stop is Montreal at Metropolis. This meant the crowd had the pleasure of getting her fresh and excited.

The show began on time. The openers for Sharon Jones were Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. I never heard of these guys before, but I was in for a treat. Their sound has a...

What's up everyone!

If you've been listening to the Limelight, you know J-Nice has been holding it down on the solo tip because I'm in Hawaii visiting my girl Sweet Feet.  I've been having an amazing time and have a new perspective on life and how to live it.

With that said I'm looking forward to having my next guest when I get on air April 9th.  We'll be interviewing Homeboy Sandman. We'll talk about his music projects but I'm looking forward to discussing his perspective on life. I saw a video interview of him on okayplayer.com and he talked about was not stressing life and work. He said if work is making you unhappy then you need to do something else. Being in Hawaii I can relate to that. The purpose of life is to enjoy every moment. If you hate your job then...

So # 1 was turntables so naturally # 2 on my list of favorite things would be

Vinyl

Vinyl!!!! I love it! How it feels how it smells when it's new and even when it's old. I love getting vinyl copy of albums even though it's rare now. My goal is to build a large vinyl collection one day, even go back to the old school days and DJ at an events using strictly vinyl.

When I was a kid I would spend hours going through my dad's vinyl collection.  When I would take one out to play on the turntable my dad you make sure I took it out with extra care, holding it at the edges so I wouldn't get...

Hey CJLOers!

I thought one the first things I'd do so y'all can get to know me better is share some of the things that I like.

Technis SL 1200

The first thing is the Technics SL1200MK2.  They're the original DJ turntable that are built to last.  These are the ones that I own and the day I got them was one of the happiest days of my life.  I hugged them and still do every so often (I'm serious).

I'm even more happy to have a pair because it was announced a few months ago that they will no longer be making these ones. It's the end of an era & I'm glad I was a part of it....

Kanye West

While I was at CMJ in NYC last October a friend of mine handed me the October issue of XXL magazine with Kanye West on the cover with the title Kanye West Love Hate.  The first thing I said when I saw that was Hate. For those who listen to my show know I love Kanye West but like everyone I was really unimpressed by the incident at the VMA's. I still loved Kanye in spite of the tantrums he threw because his music and production always prevailed.  For me though the incident was the last straw.  I mean Taylor Swift won her first award and Ye completely took away her moment. I was very impressed by Beyonce, who graciously...

Today in The Limelight we're going to be playing our favorite tracks for 2009.  Find out which tracks myself and J-Nice are feeling the most.

In addition to the best of 2009 we got the best of the decade coming up on our show January 2nd 2010.  We'll be looking back on the last ten years in hip hop and playing the tracks that we loved over the last ten years.  Have no doubt this will be a daunting task as there have been lots of great hip hop over the last ten years.  See who makes the cut!!!
