Three Canadian filmmakers will be showcasing their work at this year’s Cannes film festival. Two of the three candidates hail from Quebec, while the third contender comes from Saskatchewan.

A feature-length documentary, La Nuit, Elles Dansent will be screened in the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes, and is set to show in Montreal and Quebec City in late May. The two other films will compete for the Palme d’Or and Cinefondation awards for short films.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival will run from May 11-22.

A total of eight people were arrested during an anti-nuclear protest on Wedenesday. 

At the Montreal headquarters of Hydro-Quebec, six activists clad in Hazmat suits were detained. Two others were arrrested at Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission public hearings in Becancour. 

Four chained themselves to the doors in protest of plans to keep Quebec’s only nuclear power plant open. Two climbed onto a roof to hang a banner in protest and were taken into custody.

This week a Metro grocery store in Westmount removed and subsequently replaced a star of David hanging over an aisle of Kosher foods.
 
On Sunday, a customer complained that religious symbols have no place in the supermarket. They then took a photograph of the offensive Star and sent it to Montreal media groups.
 
The head office of Metro ordered the store manager to remove the symbol. After dozens of angry calls from customers, the Star of David has been put back in place.
 
The store has been using the symbol for 10 years during passover. The Star of David now hangs proudly...

In a recent public address, Syrian president Bashar al-Hassad has decided not to give in to protesters’ demands for reform. In a highly anticipated speech, the president did not announce any significant political reforms, disappointing protesters and international observers alike.

He declared that the preservation of Syria’s stability is most important at this time, despite having been labelled a ‘reformer’ by the Obama administration. A VIA rail train that killed three teenagers this fall had its principle headlight dimmed. On October 31, 2010, five Montreal teenagers were walking along the tracks beneath the Turcot interchange when three of them were struck and killed. The teenagers were walking away from the oncoming train and neither saw nor heard it.

It is normal procedure for trains to dim their lights when approaching highways with oncoming traffic, but this information regarding the teenagers’ death has only recently surfaced. The driver did not see the teens on the tracks until seconds before impact and so neither the whistle or bell were sounded to alert them.
