Jim Jarmusch to direct Stooges documentary

Jim Jarmusch has always worn his love of music on his sleeve, so it is no surpirse that Iggy Pop has asked the director to do a documentary on The Stooges. Music has always been a huge part of every Jarmusch film, be it in the casting (Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Joe Strummer, GZA, John Lurie, etc. etc. etc.) or as the muse that inspires the story. For example, his 1989 film "Mystery Train" is set in Memphis where each story revolves around the fact that in Memphis music is as much a part of lving as food and air, or ten years later with his brilliant Hip-Hop Samurai film "Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai" when he gave the Wu-Tang Clan's GZA complete freedom to create the score, hearing it for the first time when he was editing the film together.

Iggy has worked with Jarmusch in the past, appearing as himself opposite Tom Waits in the 1993  short film "Coffee and Cigarettes - Somewhere in California" which won the Short Film Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Fest (this segements was also one of the 11 short stories included in the 2003 feature film "Coffee and Cigarettes), and again as Sally, the cross-dressing fur trader, in the 1995 film "Dead Man". The two icons also worked together again this past summer when Jarmusch booked The Stooges for the Friday night headling set at All Tomorrow's Parties, a festival that  Jarmusch was curating.

At the moment there are not many details beyond the fact that the documentary is underway. Speaking with Pitchfork, Jarmusch acknowedged that the film is happening but also added that, "It's going to take a few years. There is no rush on it." Au contraire mon frere! This seems like a match made in rock and roll film heaven and I for one do not want it this project to fall into the all too large category "wouldn't that have been amazing" ... sorta like the Jimi Hendrix/Mile Davis record.

Anyway, as more info comes in it will be added. Now go put on Raw Power, take off all your clothes and dance around.
