Nadeau-Dubois's departure from CLASSE

Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, the co-spokesperson of the most agressive Quebec student association called CLASSE has decided to resign.

According to CBC News Nadeau-Dubois has stated that it's time for CLASSE to be run by a fresh face.

He has also announced that he has no intention of running for leader of any political party.

He has adivised the striking students to not be discouraged by his resignation and has encouraged them to continue striking.


Charest gives $100 to schoolchildren

Jean CharestQuebec Liberal premier Jean Charest switched the focus of his campaign from jobs to education, on Monday.

The Gazette says he promised a hundred dollars for every child in public primary school to help families buy school supplies.

He said the forty-five million dollar assistance will ease the financial pressure of back-to-school season.


CAQ promises tax cuts

The CAQ's Francois Legault said that Quebec families are over-taxed.

In a report by CBC News, the CAQ vowed to eliminate the $200 health service tax and to cut taxes to middle class families if elected to power.

At the end of 5 years, a family earning a combined salary of up to $100 000 would pay $1000 less in provincial taxes. The cut would cost the government $1.8 billion in lost revenue.

Both the PQ and the Liberals attacked the promise. They expressed concern over where the lost revenue would come from.

Canadians take action against the Sahel food crisis

Canada’s federal government will now match each dollar donated by Canadians to aid the food crisis that is currently threatening lives in West Africa’s Sahel region. They hope to donate a kickstart amount of $10 million to the Sahel Crisis Matching Fund.

All donations will be matched by September 30.

Funds will then be sent out by the Canadian International Development Agency. Areas that will be aided include Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mauritania, Sengal, Gambia and northern Cameroon.

Shooting rampage claims 7 lives

A shooting rampage at a Sikh temple claimed 7 lives including the shooter’s on Sunday in Oak Creek, Wisconsin.

According to CNN, the FBI will investigate the shooting as a domestic terrorist case. Three people were wounded including a police officer.

The attack occurred when temple members were reading scriptures and cooking food in preparation for the Sunday service and community lunch.

Initial reports believed that were multiple shooters involved, but police did not find any evidence to support that claim.


Jacques Duchesneau joins the CAQ

Anti-corruption whistleblower Jacques Duchesneau is the newest candidate for the Coalition Avenir Québec, reports CBC news.

He stated a need to fight corruption from the inside in his reason for participating in the political scene.

Duchesneau will be running in the riding of St-Jerôme, where he currently lives.

The former Montreal Police Chief is most noted for leaking a report on corruption and collusion in the construction industry. His profile in Quebec increased after he testified at the Charbonneau Comission on corruption.

PQ calls for truce in tuition dispute

PQ candidate Leo Bureau-Blouin is calling for a truce in the tuition dispute during the current provincial election campaign.

In a report by CBC News, the former FECQ leader said the truce would not silence the movement but would ensure a proper election campaign leading up to September 4th.


Montreal hotels struggled in July

Montreal hotels have just gone through their worst July since 2009.

The Hotel Association of Greater Montreal told the Gazette on Thursday that hotel room revenues were down almost 15 percent from July of last year.

After a surprisingly decent June, bookings took a dive in July. The association V-P William Brown also said that there wasn’t a single cause for the decline. He pointed to the high Canadian dollar, the battered euro, an election year in the U.S. and the fallout from the student protests as key reasons.


UN-Arab League envoy to Syria resigns

Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan Speaks With Press After Meeting of Action Group for SyriaKofi Annan his quit his post as UN-Arab League envoy to Syria.

According to the BBC, Annan told journalists at a press conference on Thursday that the people of Syria need help now, but said the UN Security Council hasn’t been doing enough.


Aveos rescued by AJ Walter Aviation

AJ Walter Aviation has come to the rescue for Aveos Fleet Performance due to a purchase agreement which was made between them.

According to the Gazette it was on Thursday that AJ Walter signed an agreement to purchase the aircraft maintenance business.

This is good news for the nearly three thousand Aveos employees who lost jobs after the company filed for bankruptcy protection.


Canadian Olympic team update

#london2012 beach volleyballCanadian Olympians continued to up the medal count in London.

On Wednesday, the men's eight-row team won silver. The former Olympic gold medallists lost to Germany, while hosts Great Britain came in third. But medal hopeful Alexandre Despatie was shut out of the men's synchronized diving.

Olympic Fever

 

Seven years after the city of London, England, was awarded the 2012 Summer Olympics, it has begun in earnest, kicking off in style with cameos from David Beckham, James Bond, and the Queen herself.

But when the smoke had settled on the fireworks from the Opening Ceremonies, it was time to get down to business. The usual suspects are already at the top of the medal standings, with China leading the pack on the back of its dominant divers, with the USA nipping at their heels in second place.


New Move Over Law for Quebec motorists

2008 07 14 - 5904 - Saint-Lambert - Autoroute Jean LesageQuebec motorists will have to comply with a new law or face $200 to $300 fines.

The new Move Over Law orders drivers to leave a lane for emergency vehicles, creating the safest distance possible form the stopped vehicle.

The law is aimed to prevent the injuries and deaths of people hit by oncoming vehicles.

Charest unveils 3 new candidates

Although no election has officially been called yet, Premier Jean Charest announced 3 new Liberal candidates on Sunday.

In a report by CBC News, all of the candidates are former ADQ MPs. Charest also unveiled the PLQ candidates in the northern Quebec ridings of Duplessis and Ungava dubbing them his "Plan Nord Team".


Empty seats at the Summer Olympics

London Olympics - Riverbank ArenaAlthough the events were supposedly sold-out, rows of seats were empty on the first full day of competition at the London Summer Olympics. Olympics organizers have now begun investigating the cause.

Empty seats filled the stadiums of swimming heats, volleyball and gymnastic equestrian events.

Jun Lin laid to rest

Slain Concordia student Jun Lin was laid to rest on Thursday morning at a public funeral.

About 50 people came to pay their respects at Cote-des-Neiges Funeral Complex.

A brief service was led by Father Henry Rodriguez, who read Bible excerpts and spoke highly of Lin, who was brutally dismembered and killed last May.

"His death was cruel, horrible and indignant. He was a victim. It has been a difficult time for his family, and society," said Rodriguez.

Suspicious package received in Colorado

A suspicious package was delivered to the University of Colorado-Denver earlier this week.

In a report by the Associated Press, the package turned over to authorities is believed to have been sent by shooting suspect James Holmes.

Multiple sources have reported that the package includes a notebook with drawings and descriptions of a mass attack. The package was addressed to a school psychiatrist.
