2007 Year in Review pt. 1

Tune in tonight to hear Uncle Ian and Prince Palu play tunes off of some of their favorite albums from the past year. Not so much a competition as it is an appreciation of some great music that we were lucky enough to come into contact with over the past 12 months.

And there may be a comment or two made about the NME report that The Beard Liberation Front have named Robert Plant as "Beard of the Year" ! We all know that while Mr Plant easily has a better set of vocal chords, there is no way his beard holds a candle to our Prince Palu's whiskered chin.

Peace, love and radio magic.

Me, Mom & Morgentaler make Go-Go Radio Magic

In the early nineties I attended my first live concert ... Me, Mom and Morgentaler. Had I seen a few other easy-to-digest bands before, perhaps I would have been somewhat prepared. Rumor was that an audience member had been brought up on stage only to have his head shaved in front of everyone ... needless to say I didn't know what I was getting into. As a first ever live rock concert it happened to be the most entertaining live act one could have possibly seen at the time. Indie, pop, ska all can describe the infectious music, but the performances were vaudevillian in feel with strong political leanings.

Throughout various shows of the band over the years, I've seen super heroes fighting evil, the acordian player being blown up on the spot, all the while a bake sale is under way in the lobby of the venue. With every single member giving it their all, you can't help but move. Band members, Gus Van Gogh Coriandoli, Kim Bingham, John Britton,John Jordan, Sid Zanforlin, Matt Lipscome,Noah Green and Adam Bix Berger, are back for three shows on the 14th,15th and 17th of November at Club Soda (1225 Blvd. St-Laurent).

The Go-Go Radio Magic show is very pleased to be welcoming John Jordan and Kim Bingham into the booth to share some stories related to being in one of the best live acts this city has ever been home to. They will also play some music of their choosing, and discuss the up coming shows.

Did I mention coming home one night after a MM&M show with an alien's tentacle?

Uncle Ian

Get Out Tonight Before It Snows Tomorrow

From what my sources tell me, Montreal is supposed to get another 15cm of snow tomorrow and if you are anything like me that means a return to hibernation. Fair enough, if mother nature wants to play this game we've dealt with it for months now and a few more days ain't gonna hurt us. But before you all crawl back under your duvets and settle in for another run through of your favorite HBO series, get down to Divan Orange and check out the triple bill of The Sunday Sinners, Percy Farm, and Lil' Andy.

There will be enough sweaty rock and roll flowin' from the stage to help us all forget that it is mid-April and there is still more snow on the way.

My Fathers First Name Is Norm

A week following the big move that shocked the world of radio. That of course being The Go-Go Radio Magic Show sliding down the schedule to the 6-8 slot after nearly 3 years of doing the Friday night overnight ... and I'm not sure if everyone shares my level of shock at the whole thing but since I also don't know if they don't let's assume it to be true.

Anyway, the excitement keeps coming this week. April 6th 2007 marks a double whammy of joy as it is both the 60th birthday of everybodys lovable know-it-all Cliff Clavin and more importantly it marks the return of ol' Uncle Ian to the airwaves.

Seeing as I don't know John Ratzenberger personallly we will celebrate his six decades the only way we can - playing music that may or may not have anything to do with his particular tastes.

It is a little known fact that The Go-Go Radio Magic Show is the number 2 rated show amongst US Postal workers.

Happy Birthday Cliff and Cheers to the return of Ian.

2006 Review

It seems to be that time of year again when everyone has to tell you what was the best of the past year ... well, you know what they say, when in Rome. Just remember that I don't truly feel that this kind of thing should be so much of a ranking art as it is just some suggestions that you may have missed or just to see if we agree. Besides this list could change an hour after it is written as my mood shifts, dig it ?

ALBUMS
1. Tom Waits "Orphans"
2. Howe Gelb: "Sno Angel Like You"
3. My Morning Jacket: "Okonokos"
4.Bob Dylan: "Modern Times"
5. Andre Ethier: "Secondathallam"

SHOWS
1. Howe Gelb Sno' Angel Project @ Sala Rosa, Dec 15th

These Weather Changes Got Me Under The Weather

As winter finally arrived and punched Montreal in the mouth today it also took down yours truly and saddled me with a killer bout of the stuffy head, sore throat & sniffles. While it was my desire to not miss another show as we closed out 2006, I regretfully won't be able to make it in tonight. With the holiday season almost upon us I couldn't risk gettting a full blown case of the influenza.

Luckily for me, on my way home in the pouring rain today I happened upon an elderly couple selling bottles of Bonnore's Electromagnetic Bath out of the trunk of their Cadillac Eldorado. Rodney was a bit of a grump, but Ethel was as sweet as a Georgia Peach. Anyway, the point is that there won't be any Go-Go Radio Magic Show tonight, but I should be back on my feet in no time.

Sitting here under a blanket listening to CJLO's newest show Basin to Basie makes me want to take an extra dose of the old Bonnore's and get in there tonight, but Ethel warned me to not take this stuff lightly. And hey if I use it properly it should also cure my mercurial eruptions and female complaints.

Country & Western Extravaganza

Howdy y'all, once again it is time for one of those beloved themed Go-Go Radio Magic Show. Uncle Ian has been wranglin' for this one for quite some time, so last week a test run was conducted at the start of the show (you can check the playlist if you're curious what that entailed). With the test run going off without a problem and the incredible success of the Frank Black Extravaganza a few weeks back, the timing is perfect for this hoedown.

Five hours of all things Country & Western ... Bluegrass and Western Swing, Nashville Sound and Texas Outlaws, Country Blues and Alt.Country ... YEE HAW !!

As always we will be open to requests, but as this is a very special episode if your songs don't fit into tonights format they may have to wait until next week when we return to a regularly programmed show.

Life And Times:
Black Francis/Frank Black

After the Frank Black show this past Wednesday at La National, Uncle Ian proposed that he drop by the old CJLO studio tonight for a retrospective on one of the most influential artists of the past 20 years. Always happy to have Unlce Ian grace the show with his presence, I giddily accepted.

Starting with his work in the Pixies, his change from Black Francis to Frank Black, his time with the Catholics to his current work with some of Nashville's finest sessions players, we will be covering it all. All this while Uncle Ian regals us with tales of his days as Frank's high school math tutor.

It all gets under way at midnight tonight, so in the immortal words of the late Billy Red Lyons, "Dont'cha dare miss it !"

Old, New, Borrowed & Blue

Hello friends, against the advice of my agent and marketing team, I am happy to annouce that there will be no show tonight. Well I'm not happy that the show will not happen, but I am happy that the reason is 'cause I'm getting married tomorrow to Jenny Jam and therefore will have to leave you to your own devices this week.

I'd say "I'm sorry", but I'm just too damn excited about the wedding to think about anyone else right now. So for that I guess I'm sorry.

Peace, Love and Music,

The Jenny Jam & Miss Tamsin Special

Who are these people, you ask ? Well, Jenny Jam, way back in days of yonder, was my original sidekick (she is also the woman lucky enough to lasso this wild bronco y'all call Prince Palu), while Miss Tamsin is a special West coast correspondant of the Go-Go Radio Magic Show who has been in Montreal this past week to submit her annual report of the B.C./Alberta numbers for the first half of 2006.

Unfortunately, due to unforseen circumstances, I was not able to meet with Miss Tamsin very much and therefore asked her to program an hour's worth of music that would then give us an indication of how things are going out West. Once word of this leaked to the press, not wanting to be miss a good throw down, Jenny Jam decided to add another hour of her own just like it was 2004 all over again.

So tune in early to find out what these sexy mamas will be throwin' your way. I promise it will be different and it will be eclectic, but it will also have that Go-Go Radio Magic that you'll be looking for. Where else you gonna hear Paul Anka and De La Soul ?

I Ain't Never Been Scared Of A Challenge !

It seems that the last few weeks at the old Go-Go Radio Magic Show have been a little too rock 'n' roll for some listeners. "We want the funk !" they demand, and "they" ain't the type to take lightly. In fact these "they" don't mince words and are prone to violence when ignored.

Well I have accepted your funk challenge and plan to bring it tonight. Although I must say that I don't necessarily agree that the funk has been ignored over the past few weeks. So to "they" all I can say is that some times we must be careful of what we wish for, or maybe some other cliché like, your eyes are bigger than your belly ... on second thought we'll stick with the "be careful of what you wish for". The eyes/belly thing only works when talking about food.

Anyway, the funk will be brought tonight. Consider yourself warned. Actually based on what happened the last time the funk was brought so hard it was I who was hit with the whammy, but not this time sucker !

May the funk be with you and Happy Thanksgiving.

Here's hopin' that this was only the first shot and not just an isolated incident. As a species we need the Democrats to follow Slick Willie's lead and testify ! Maybe this will start the ball rolling against the Republicans and will eventually lead to their downfall in the next election.

Let The Tradition Begin

Every now and then musical forces join together with a special little watering hole to create a cultural revolution.

What would the world be like had Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell never walked into that country music bar in New York City and asked for a show ? The simple answer is crap. The longer answer is that the CBGB never happens, punk never takes over rock n roll returning it to its roots, and disco goes unchallenged and probably leads to nuclear war. Well that last part is only a assumption, but you get my point, it would have been very bad.

That is why it is so exciting to annouce the first official CJLO Wednesday night event at Reggie's (Downtown Campus in the Hall Building). Come on down, bring a friend or two and be able to say that you were there when it all began. And hey, you might win a prize and everyone like to win prizes, right ?

Back To School Special

Alright ! Hey friends it is Friday September 1st 2006, you know what that means ? It means that the long awaited return of The Go-Go Radio Magic Show is here. And as promised, tonight will be a very special "Back To School" edition of the show.

Along for the ride will be Uncle Ian  bringing his slightly off kilter brand of helpful advice and dirty jokes, and there is always a chance that The Amazing Ashleigh will swing by and share some of her radio magic tricks for your audio pleasure.

A solid mix of music so frightening to commercial radio that it could only happen on CJLO. From midnight to 5 a.m. we will be bringing everything from rockabilly to reggae, classical to hip-hop, psychadelic country to delta blues, British folk to New Orleans funk and then some ! If it sounds too good to be true or too bad to be good, then why not stop by and hear for yourself.

The Deadly Snakes Call It Quits

Stunned when I heard the news, now 24 hours later I am simply just gutted. I'm sure they had their reasons and I wish them all the best, but it is a sad day for music as the world lost one of the truly great bands. The adjective "brilliant" gets thrown around way too much these days, but if you ever saw the Deadly Snakes live you'd know it was an understatement for these fellas.

For anyone able to get there, they are playing a farewell show at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, this Friday, August 25th. I wish I could be there because I know it will be a show that those lucky enough to catch it will never forget it. Think I'm kidding ? Obviously you never show the Deadly Snakes play.

Oh jeez, I got something in my eye ... *sniff* ... i gotta go ... *sniff* ...

Another Saturday Explanation ...

For the second straight week a hi-jacking by a group of 19th and 20th century Europeans has prevented me from performing my duties as your humble servant, Prince Palu.

It started with an essay about Rosa Luxemburg and her views on the state of the socialist movement at the beginning of the first World War. Not so bad, but time consuming when you consider all the reading that would entail, on top of the 40 hours at the old warehouse job that still have to be done to pay the rent.

Then came the four letter word that strikes fear into the hearts of all students around the world, be they communist or capitalist, EXAM ! With the summer semester winding down the students of HIST202 at Concordia were given 6 study questions for the final. SIX !! Add to that the continuing work on old Rosa's rants and the extra reading required for the dozen identification questions that will also be part of the final and you can see how it could all be seen as an educational hi-jacking.

Now maybe comparing what some might consider as the normal events of a summer history class to the horrific images of a hi-jakcing are a bit much, but since I am about to tell you that there will not be a show next week either I might be guilty of a little sympathy fishing.

The reason for the cancellation of next weeks show has nothing to doing with Bolsheviks, term papers or World Wars. August 25th to 27th is the Weekend To End Breast Cancer and I am volunteering from Friday until Sunday. So while I hate to miss three shows in a row ( hell I hate to miss one show), as I have said before, some things are even more important than the Go-Go Radio Magic Show.

All that being said, you should know that to make up for all the lost time and frayed relationships, a very special "Back To School" edition of the show is already being planned. No details can be given out at this time but you can be assured that it will be worth the wait.

So until the beginning of September, as Josef Stalin used to say, "Keep it loose and stay funky, comrade"

Hello & Goodbye

HELLO

I am very excited to annouce that tonight we will welcome a very special guest into the studio. The Amazing Ashleigh will drop by and add a little spark of magic to the show. The great, great, great, great grand-daughter of Harry Houndini's neighbour ! We can only hope that she will reveal some of the secrets the great magician must have told her distant relatives, who would surely have passed them down through generations just in case one of their kin ever had the chance to steal old Harry's tricks and preform them on the worlds leading radio magic revival show. Well, tonight that destiny is about to pass into radio magic lore.

GOODBYE

However on a sad note tonight we will also mark the passing of the psychadelic martyr, Syd Barrett, who passed away July 7th at the age of 60 due to complications to diabeties. A founding member of the Pink Floyd who left after their first album. Syd's influence on music was enormous even if it was to brief, The Pipers at the Gates of Dawn (1967), The Madcap Laughs (1969) and Barrett (1970) being his only official releases. So in honour of the man who fried for your sins, we will start tonights show off with some of his finest work.

Syd's songs ! Houdini's tricks ! And a few of those old trustworthy Soul numbers that make every Friday night special.

Tune in, turn on and drop out.

Well don't actually drop out if you are enjoying school but if you are there for all the wrong reasons ...

A Renaissance Man

Here we are on another Saturday morning in the month of June 2006 and I am again trying to give you another reason why you couldn't get your Go-Go Radio Magic fix last night. It is exam time for ol' Prince Palu and with the way this month had been going it was necessary to make this weekend strictly about studying.

The exam will be based on European history from the Renassiance to the Enlightenment. Do you have any idea of how much happened in those couple of centuries ? Me neither, but I do know it was a lot.

After realizing that the Thursday night screening of The Da Vinci Code wasn't going to be enough, I decided to hit the books. Now I just have to make sure that Tom Hanks doesn't show up on my exam.

As for the Go-Go Radio Magic Show, fear not, the show will go. June has been a bad month all around but with July just around the corner things will turn in our favour. So as Leonardo Da Vinci once said, " When June sucks, July is always where it's at." Or was that Tom Hanks ? Wait now I'm getting confused. Which one was in Bosom Buddies ?

The Bubonic Plague Strikes Agian

For the second straight week I found myself unable to bring you the Go-Go Radio Magic Show. First there was the move from hell (see below) and now the Black Death of Medieval Europe has reared it's ugly head in the year 2006. No, I did not contract the plague from the filthiness of the apartment that I recently moved into. I do however have to write a 10+ page essay on the subject (which may not be quite as bad as contracting the plague, but it's bad enough !) Actually it is not an essay on the plague, it is a historical analysis of a document written in mid-1300's about the plague.

What any of this has to do with the cancellation of the show last night is that I couldn't be sleeping all day Saturday as I am want to do after doing an overnight show, so once again I was forced by powers beyond my control to make you all wait another week for that old Go-Go Radio Magic.

Next week will mark a return to that old new years resolution about not missing shows this year.

THE MOVE FROM HELL !!

It is around 10 o'clock on this rainy Saturday morning and I am sitting in my new apartment in the heart of Montreal, listening to Sonny Rollins and enjoying some fine organic wild blueberry jam on toast. Sounds very peaceful and in fact it is ... now ! The past 3 days have damn near killed me.

Moving has never been my favorite thing to do, but this one is the worst one yet. To give you a frame of reference of how bad this one was, I once moved about 25 blocks in Vancouver, on foot, with only a shopping chart to cut down on the number of trips. Okay, now that you have that image in your head, this one was much, much worse. The new apartment was the filthiest place i have ever seen that wasn't news footage of a crack house or a hurricane Katrina damaged building. The living room looked like it had been pulled out of a swamp ! Normally when people say that the floor was covered in dirt they are exaggerating and really talking about a few dust bunnies and the likes. Well in this case the living room floor was literally covered in dirt, potting soil to be exact. And the stove ...

I will spare you any more details and just say that on top of this colossial job of moving I had to miss my show last night and I hate doing that for any reason, but especially because some a**hole dosen't have the courtesy to at least sweep up after himself and run a sponge over the place before vacating.

A thousand apologies to anyone how tried to tune in for their weekly Go-Go Radio Magic fix. I will be back next week at midnight ready to make it up to you.

Peace, Love and Organic Blueberry Jam,
Prince Palu

A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE 4 am

Whoa, soaking wet I just walked in the door after walking home from the station. The rain, she is coming down. I don't see being able to fall asleep for awhile, so I've decided to wrap up tonight's show with a post Go-Go Radio Magic explanation. It's funny 'cause before tonight's show a warning was given to anyone who planned to listen tonight, the one hour funk heavy intro might be too much for their minds to handle. Turns out it was I who should have heeded that warning.

Not sure if it had anything to do with the weather or the position of the moon, but something was in the air. Maybe it was due to the stress of my never-ending pursuit for that oh-so elusive steady job, and the cash flow problems that that brings, combined with the stress of getting ready to move at the end of the month, but something inside my head reacted to that funk bomb that went off from midnight till 1:00 am. The show took on a life of its own at that point and dragged me along for the ride. A two and a half hour freak out of psychedelic bliss and jazz fusion from the likes of Soft Machine, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Can, and John Coletrane Quartet, sent my mind to outerspace and back again. Returning me just in time for some of the requests sent in by you, the loyal listener. Not able fit all of them in during the remaining 30 minutes some songs didn't make it onto the program. I promise to get to the rest of them next week, right at the beginning of the show, scout's honour.

Thanks for letting me have my cathartic purge and for sticking it out with me. Remember what Dr. Funkenstein taught us, "Funk can not only move, it can also remove," and remove it did, as all my anxiety washed away with the heavy bass.

What will next week bring ? Tune in and find out if you are curious.

Peace, Love and Music.
Prince Palu

THE CRTC COMETH

With the move to AM radio comes a few minor alterations to the CJLO playlist rules. The CRTC has given us a College Radio License, which only makes sense seeing as we are a college radio station, but that means no more hit songs. All the details have not been made crystal clear to yours truly, but I have decided to shy away from the big names (Dylan, Stones, Beatles, CCR, etc.) just to be safe. Now that may not seem like much of a problem to you, but to me it was like having to choose which finger I'd like to cut off. Over dramatic you say ? Being a wee bit of a drama queen ? Need to get my priorities in check ? Well that may be true, but then again maybe it is you who needs the correcting. Anyways, we could sit here all day and try and figure out who needs the fixing more, but I gots things that must get done before my girl Jenny gets home; there is no food in this house, garbage needs taking out, cat litter needs to be changed, lots of packing to do before the end of the month move ... okay, maybe I need to get my priorities in line.

We're getting off track here, my point of this rant is to annouce that last week's jazz heavy show got such a great response that I have decided it will be a permanent change to the show. Jazz was always supposed to be a bigger part of the show, but was often the stuff that got cut during the course of the night. Well no more, but just to make sure not to scare people away with a four letter word like "jazz", tonight's show will start off with an uninterrupted one hour of heavy funk, old school and funky blues to ease in the change.

This hour long intro set tonight just may be the playlist that I want them to carve into my tombstone. A little pompous, am I ? Get over myself, you say ? Well just check it out and let me know what you think. In my humble opinion, it may make your head explode with such a concentration of funk, but you may disagree. It may even be illegal in some places to play this heavy of a set to begin a show. Sound like a huge wanker, do I ? Give me one hour to change your mind. But if you don't like it, just remember that once they are spoken (or written) words can't be taken back and some people are more sensitive than others. Be kind and keep the funk alive.

What ? Well maybe I am a nerd, but a nerd who will be bringing the funk tonight at midnight. Consider yourself warned.

This is the last weekend to catch OCTO Productions presentation of Sam Shepard's brilliant play True West.

The play is centred around two brothers, Austin and Lee, as they house sit for their vacationing mother. They appear to be very different people at the beginning, but as the action takes place it becomes clear that Shepard is in some ways writing about the same person; the idea that all people are conflicted with two-sides to their personalities.

The writing is so complex and inviting to any actor worth their weight in Playbills that it has been tackled by some of the greatest living actors on the face of the earth. Back in the 80's John Malkovich and Gary Sinise had a go and filmed it for American Playhouse TV series, then a few years back John C. Reilly and Phillip Seymour Hoffman took it to the stage in New York City (to make it even more challenging they alternated roles every night). Now it is OCTO Producitons' turn. Is it fair to compare our local actors with these four ? Well they wouldn't have taken on such a play if they didn't feel up to the challenge.

Whether you are an avid goer to the theatre or a never-been-beforer, this is a play you must see. Get out there and support local theatre and make whoever you take think you're all cultured and in the know.

A Thousand Apologies

I just got home and felt so guilty at cutting the show short tonight that I wanted to try to explain the reason a little better.

When I got to the station at the end of Kiran's show, Beyond That Graveyard III (which you should all be listening to), there was only one studio monitor working. Then during the Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty duet that monitor blew. Now I was left with headphones that only worked through the left side. Unable to really monitor the show and thrown off by the fact that the equalizer on the mixing board was only showing the left side as well, I had to shut her down early. (I know more about traditional Japanese tea ceremonies than I do about sound boards. All the knobs mean about as much to me as they would to my cat Thelonious.)

The point being that my lack of technical skills made it impossible for me to do the show as I normally do it, and being a creature of habit that is not a good situation for old Prince Palu.

I am a little bit pissed as the show was going so smoothly otherwise. I had a full show lined up, but it will have to wait until next week. Four full hours of rock & soul, blues & roll, reggae, country and all that other good stuff, I promise.

Sincerely,
Prince Palu

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY

To celebrate the most drunken of all the festive holidays, and the one day when everyones Irish, the show tonight will begin with a set of songs to honour some of the best that Ireland has to offer. From Van Morrison to Phil Lynott to Shane MacGowan, the Emerald Isle has given some of the most poetic, tragic, rockin' and beautiful characters in the history of rock and roll. Since I don't have any traditional Celtic music CD's, you'll have to get your fill of that at the pub ( trust me this won't be a problem ). If you live in NDG might I suggest Honey Martin ( 5916 Sherbrooke W. ) or Ye Olde Orchard Pub ( 5563 Monkland Ave. ) If you see me at either one maybe you could buy me a glass or two of Guinness for the suggestion ? And how's about that kiss ?

Alas, if you can't buy me glass of Guinness or kiss me 'cause I'm Irish, just tune in and we'll slur our way through to tomorrow.

May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His Hand.

SLAINTE !

The Go-Go Radio Magic Show On Sick Leave

Due to illness Prince Palu will not be able to bring you your weekly dose of Go-Go Radio Magic.

A thousand apologies to everyone that sent in their requests this week, but tune in next week when all requests will be doubled up. Does that make sense ? You see for each request you make, a second song by that artist will be played. Make any sense yet ? Think of it as a 2-for-1 apology of sorts. Still not clear ? How's this for an example, Handsome Betmanis requested "Bankrobber" by The Clash, so after that song is played another classic track from "the world's most important band" will be selected by Prince Palu as an added bonus for Mr. Betmanis, can you dig it ?

Thank you for your understanding.

Peace, love and hot water bottles to you all on this cold February weekend.

They Say That Variety
Is The Spice Of Life

Just wanted to clear up a misconception about the Go-Go Radio Magic Show.

Now for my loyal listeners who dig the show and continue to send their love and requests week after week this need not be said. However, for the person who sent an e-mail saying that the show sounded "confused", it is very important that you read this carefully.

You say that a show that plays too many styles of music is "proving that they don't know what to do", well friend that just isn't the case. If you had said that I wasn't good at mixing the various styles that I play, well that would be a valid opinion (hopefully not a popular one), but to say that it shouldn't happen is just wrong.

When the show started, the idea behind it was to create a place where music was played based on talent not marketing. To say that Waylon Jennings, The Ramones and Funkadelic don't belong on the same show is as absurd as saying that pretzels and chocolate don't belong together, and anyone who has tried Hershey's Max 5 will tell you that it's just not true. Now I was also a big fan of the Big Turk candy bar as a child, so maybe that will expalin why I think that Black Sabbath and Blackalicious can live in beautiful harmony without the shame of being from different musical styles. This is not to say that all things in life need to be blended together, take for example Professional Wrestling and Boxing. Remember the debacle when Muhammad Ali fought Antonio Inoki ? It was embarrassing for all involved. But don't let that ridiculous cross-promotion be an excuse to judge the New York Dolls for the way they dress or Willie Nelson 'cause you happen to be a card carrying member of the Wu-Tang Clan fan club. Just listen to the music and maybe, just maybe, you'll discover that you like it.

To answer the question, "why can the show sometimes be so different from one week to the next ?" is simple: the shows are usually planned on Friday afternoon and how it turns out is based on what kind of mood I happen to be in that particular afternoon. Sometimes a little bit country, sometimes a little bit rock 'n' roll, whereas today it is definitely going to be a hard return to the funk. So tune in and let me know what you think. I don't mind negative e-mails, no such thing as bad press and all that, but I much prefer the extremely kind ones.

2005 Review

The thing about Top Ten lists or any other rankling system is that they can change daily, so I have always refrained from doing one. Then my girl Jenny told me to stop being such a nerd, "It's just for fun. Besides, nobody really cares that much what you think !"

That was all I needed to hear to stop obsessing about the "tough" decisions of who would make "the list" - not just any list bub ! This is the Go-Go Radio Magic Show list, bucko !

ALBUMS
1. The Deadly Snakes "Porcella"
2. My Morning Jacket "Z"
3. Spoon "Gimme Fiction"
4. Black Mountain "Black Mountain"
5. The Detroit Cobras "Baby"

Note: The Sunday Sinners S/T debut gets honourable mention, but I think it was actually out in 2004 so doesn't qualify for Best of 2005. However, if you listened to the show at all over the past year you know that nobody got more spins on the Go-Go Radio Magic Show than our favorite Sinners.

Goodbye 2005,
Hello 2006 !

It sure has been crazy busy the past few weeks around my house, as I'm sure it has been around yours, but it looks like things are starting to get back to normal. Our regular scheduled program will return as planned, please stand by and thank you for your patience.

With the technical problems at the station two weeks ago and then the holiday festivities last week the Go-Go Radio Magic Show had to take an unplanned leave of absence, but fear not loyal listener, and casual stumblin'byer, Prince Palu is back and the show will go on. In fact my new year's resolution for 2006 is to not miss a show for the whole year. Hard to believe you say, well the only way to know for sure is to check in each Friday night at midnight (that is EST here in la belle province, if you are in another part of the world please check a time conversion chart) and help keep the resolution alive. Now go tell all your friends and let's make 2006 a year to remember. Or at least a year to help us forget the crap year that was 2005.

Happy New Year !

Note: Due to the technical problems at CJLO on Dec 16th the planned tribute to the late Richard Pryor could not happen, so tonight I will play That Nigger's Crazy at the end of the show. It's a little late but I'm sure Richard will understand.

Richard Pryor
1940 - 2005

Yesterday the world lost a true legend and I lost a personal hero.

Richard Pryor, for my money the most important comedian of all time, died of a heart attack at age 65. Referred to by other comedians as God, Richard Pryor influenced everything that came after him. He took all the pain inside him and turned it into pure, honest comedy that was as much political and social commentary as it was gut burstingly funny.

Fearless on stage, nothing was taboo to Pryor. Everything from his traumatic childhood - growing up in his grandmother's brothel where his mother worked as a prostitute before abandoning him at age 10 - to his battles with alcohol and cocaine - that hit bottom in 1980 when he doused himself with rum and set it ablaze while freebasing cocaine - were used to make us laugh. Anyone else would have just depressed the room, but Pryor could pull it off. Bill Cosby once described the line between comedy and tragedy in Pryor's comedy "as thin as one could possibly paint it.' Listening to Richard Pryor at his best was more than just listening to a guy tell jokes, he was a performance artist who used words the way Charlie Parker used the saxaphone or Muhammad Ali used his fists.

Awarded the first ever Kennedy Center Mark Twain Humour Prize in 1998, Pryor's acceptance speech summed up his sense of humour perfectly, "Two things people throughout history have had in common are hatred and humour. I am proud, that like Mark Twain, I've been able to use humour to lesson people's hatred. I feel great about accepting this prize. It is nice to be regarded on par with a great white man. Now that's funny !"

While it is sad when we lose someone who is important to us, and Richard Pryor was important to you whether you realize it or not, at least he left us with the best medicine to help get through the pain. If you haven't ever listened to Richard Pryor's stand-up comedy, get your hands on a copy of his 1974 album That Nigger's Crazy and hear for yourself.

In case you can't find it or afford it once you have, tune in this week to hear that classic album in its entirety.

Ruby Hamer
1913 - 2005

One of my favorite memories of my Grandma Ruby is from my first visit to England when I was 12 years old.

Due to the combination of the jet lag and the time difference, my sleeping pattern was totally thrown off my first day there. Upon arriving I fell into a deep sleep at about 9 am only to find it difficult to sleep that night. While everyone else went off to bed, I stayed up to watch the BBC late night movie. Not wanting to leave me alone Grandma decided to watch it with me. However, half way through she sweetly kissed me on top of the head and said it wasn't "her kind of movie". I went to bed shortly after, but I'll never forget the night me and my Grandma curled up together and watched "The Terminator".

Good bye Grandma. I love you.

Hootenanny Tour

For any one who missed last night’s show at La Divan Orange, I feel you should know that it might have been the best house party of the year. The free flowing stage of performers, combined with the amazing old country/bluegrass music that filled the air made the already intimate space as cozy as your best friends apartment.

With Carolyn Mark playing hostess for the nights festivities everyone was in very capable hands. If you are not aware, this wasn’t just any show but a traveling version of her decade old, weekly music showcase at Logan’s in Victoria.

In a recent article in the Mirror, Carolyn Mark was quoted saying, “I always thought Montreal was the party I wasn’t invited to but finally, I think it took”, and after last night’s sold out show, as well as her March 7th show at La Salla Rosa, I would have to agree. The west coast’s secret has been leaked in la belle province and we are all better off for it.
