Anti-Gilmour rally by U of T students

University of Toronto students have organized a rally Friday to protest against a literature professor’s negative comments about female writers.

According to the CBC, the comments made by the professor, David Gilmour ran on Hazlitt Magazine, an online publication.

Hazlitt staff says his comments ran unedited as he said that he was not interested in teaching books by women. Gilmour further explained to CBC that he is not equipped to teach female authors.

Miriam Novic, who organized the rally and started a Facebook page in protest with others, wants people to know that Gilmour is not representative of the university. She also wants Victoria College to seriously reconsider his continued employment.

The anti-Gilmour rally has been given the name “Serious Heterosexual Guys for Serious Literary Scholarship”, inspired by other comments Gilmour made about only being interested in heterosexual male writers.
