Debris nearly hits Space Station and last ever shuttle launch

An unidentified piece of space-junk narrowly missed the International Space Station on Tuesday, as it flashed by at high speed. The incident forced the six astronauts on board the orbiting lab into their rescue craft.

Space agency officials say the debris was the closest object to have ever flown by the station. It missed the space lab by  335 meters.

No harm was done by its fly by.

Back on Earth, NASA confirmed that July 8 will be the last ever space shuttle launch.

Atlantis will then fly to the International Space Station with a year's worth of supplies, before retiring to a museum.

The 12-day mission will close out the 30-year shuttle program.
