Major storms rip through several Midwest US states

Tornado Damage

The calendar may say November, however, a line of strong storms hit several US Midwest states on Sunday, causing major damage.

A report issued by the National Weather Service and obtained by CBC News, says that 59 tornadoes touched down in numerous Midwest counties. Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana and Missouri were the hardest hit states.

Washington, Illinois was the town which suffered the most damage. The twister reduced homes to rubble and scattered debris everywhere. Two died and hundreds were injured in Washington alone.

The line of severe storms caused havoc in Chicago as well. A football game was halted for 90 minutes as fans were told to evacuate and seek shelter when downtown Chicago went dark.

The NWS stated that abnormally warm temperatures and a storing southerly wind were the main contributors to these storms, which continue to weaken as they move eastward.
