METAL MARCH - UPCOMING METAL MOVIES!

Coming Soon to a Theatre Near You!

For this edition of METAL MARCH, Chris the Frog from CJLO's Sewer Spewer (Wednesdays at 1PM) runs down his top three must-see films with dark, heavy metal themes. Normal people beware!

Slave To The Grind: A Film About Grindcore

Slave to the Grind will be the first official documentary on grindcore music and extreme metal. Director Doug Brown started off interviewing bands in the Toronto area, but after raising almost $20,000 through Kickstarter, he was able to travel to different festivals like Maryland Deathfest, Obscene Extreme North America, and TerrorFest and interview members from Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, and Capitalist Casualties.

Most people think that grindcore is just one minute of screaming and fast drumming, but as Mark "Barney" Greenway of Napalm Death describes, "Grindcore can be the slowest, most painful thing ever, and it can be the most crazy, off-the-rails, falling-down-the-stairs, fast noise that you can imagine. Those are the parameters."

Doug Brown was able to get all the footage he needed, but now has to go through the lengthy process of editing. The movie is set to be released in December 2017.

Hair Metal Shotgun Zombie Massacre: The Movie

This movie sounds very ridiculous. It pretty much steals the concept of Evil Dead but with hairspray, spandex pants, and lots of cocaine. Fictional band Witches' Lips set out to record their first full-length album in creepy cabin in the middle of nowhere and unintentionally unleash a demonic power by reading a book, that raises the dead in the surrounding cemetery. The band must now battle an army of the undead and still record a killer record.

The movie will also feature cameos from metal gods such as Tom Araya from Slayer, Randy Blythe of Lamb of God, and David Vincent from Morbid Angel. There will be blood by the gallon. The movie will most likely do a circuit of sneak previews in the summer and then released promptly after that.

Gutterdämmerung

Advertised as "The Loudest Silent Movie on Earth", Gutterdämmerung is a black-and-white, mostly silent rock movie created by Swedish director Björn Tagemose. The story is apparently based on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, though reading the synopsis doesn't give any clue to that: a punk rock angel defiantly throws down a magical guitar from heaven to earth, where an evil priest, a cowboy and a warlord face off for control over the guitar.

The big catch about this movie is that it features rock legends in the main cast. Iggy Pop plays the fallen angel, Henry Rollins plays the puritan priest, and the late great Lemmy Kilmister took on the role of a tank master (how appropriate!). Tom Araya, Grace Jones, Mark Lanegan, and Slash also make an appearance. The trailer only offers a glimpse of what to expect, but it already looks visually stunning and incredibly epic.

The movie is currently being screened at music festivals around Europe, accompanied by a live rock band. There is no news yet on whether it will have a theatrical release sometime in the future.
