Shuttle Debris surfaces in Texas

Debris from U.S. space shuttle Columbia surfaced in a dried up lake in Eastern Texas late last week. Lake Nacogdoches, north of Houston, had been receding as a result of  a severe drought.

The globe-shaped object discovered was one of the 18 tanks that helped power the ill-fated Columbia shuttle. Columbia disintegrated on its way back to earth in 2003, killing all seven astronauts on board.

Lisa Malone, a spokeswoman from NASA, says that 38-40 per cent of the shuttle has been recovered so far.

NASA also says it has plans to get the resurfaced tank shipped back to Florida, where it will join other parts of Columbia stored in the Kennedy Space Center.
