Tribal conflicts in South Sudan force many to flee

South Sudan Airplane on AirstripTribal conflicts in South Sudan have left thousands of villagers waiting for help from UN and government troops. Tensions escalated over the weekend as armed youth from the Lou Nuer tribe attacked the rival Murle tribe.

According to Al-Jazeera, the attack took place in the town of Pibor, home of the Murle tribe, leaving many dead. The Lou Nuer tribe is accusing the Murle tribe of cattle raiding. The conflicts have forced villagers to hide in the bush, including medical workers from Doctors Without Borders.

According to UN reports, ethnic violence, cattle raids, and reprisal attacks last year left more than a thousand people dead. The UN estimates between 20 000 and 50 000 villagers are currently displaced without food, shelter, and water.
