CSU Elections Interview Series - VP Academic & Advocacy

In this installment of the CJLO News 2012/2013 CSU Elections interview series, Joel Balsam discusses the newly established combo position of VP Academic & Advocacy with Concordia Could Be candidate Chuck Wilson and A Better Concordia candidate Lucia Gallardo.


Anti-Police Brutality Protest today

The annual Anti-Police Brutality Demonstration is scheduled for Thursday at 5pm. According to CTV, police say they’re gearing up for the protest with mace, chemical deterrents such as tear gas, and stun grenades. Montreal’s chief inspector warned police will react the moment protestors break the law.

Only two out of the last sixteen protests have been peaceful.  Last year, more than two-hundred people were arrested.

The chief inspector said that he has seen protestors throw rocks and blocks of ice and has seen sticks with nails taped to them.


Student protesters block highway 40 in Montreal

Montreal students took their protest to the Metropolitain Highway during rush hour yesterday, blocking traffic between the Cavendish and d'Iberville exits.

According to CBC News, the protest began earlier in the afternoon at Quebec finance minister Raymond Bachand's Montreal office.

The demonstration moved to Highway 40 around 3p.m., where students took over the eastbound lanes.

Police were able to force protesters off the road 15 minutes later.

They also directed commuters off the Met at Christophe-Colomb exit in order to relieve some of the rush-hour congestion.


CSU Strike starts

The Concordia Student Union strike officially starts today. It will last from the fifteenth until the twenty-second of March.

 The dates were initially set from the twenty-second until the twenty-ninth but were changed during the general assembly. The dates were changed in order to present a more timely opposition to the provincial budget.

Request to temporarily reinstate disqualified candidates denied

There will be no temporary reinstatement for the two Concordia Student Union candidates disqualified last week.

The CSU Judicial Board denied the request yesterday morning. A Better Concordia presidential candidates Schubert Laforest and VP academics and clubs Lucia Gallardo will likely have to wait until the final decision appears next Friday.

The Judicial Board claimed there was not enough evidence proving the disqualifications were unjustified.


Quebec is challenging the federal government when it comes to Bill C-10

Quebec ParliamentThe provincial government is challenging Harper’s criminial justice legislation.

According to CTV Montreal, Quebec will try to soften Bill C-10 where possible.

The provincial justice minister, Jean-Marc Fournier, is asking Ottawa to pay for the newly required jail spaces.

A number of issues were discussed at the Concordia Board of Governors meeting Monday.

Concern over the use of the Concordia brand by student groups was brought to light by two governors.


McGill's arts undergraduates to vote on strike today

McGill University - Arts BuildingMcGill University’s arts undergraduates will be voting yes or no to an unlimited general student strike today.

The faculty representing around six thousand students will be deciding whether or not to join the one hundred and seventy thousand students in Quebec already mandated to strike.


A Better Concordia: Shocked "Concordia student politics have sunken to a new low"

In a statement to fellow Concordians, A Better Concordia addressed the release of candidates Schubert Laforest and Lucia Gallardo's student records.

Both candidates were disqualified from the upcoming CSU election for allegedly not being registered students.

An investigation is being held to discover the origin of the documents.


Conservative party's Bill C-10 passes

Canadian Parliament: view from Hull QuebecThe House of Commons voted yesterday to pass the Conservative party’s new crime bill, called Bill C-10, after three hours of debate.

According to CBC, the vote was originally scheduled for last Wednesday, but the NDP postponed the final debate until Friday. 


Student strike persists

YyyyyAccording to CBC, a student sit-in protest at l’Université à Montréal on Sainte-Catherine turned into an overnight event on Monday.

Students began to bring out chairs from the university and played music and made art.

These students were mostly from UQAM and CÉGEP Vieux-Montréal.

Canadians file class action lawsuit against tobacco companies

A group of Canadian smokers have filed a class action lawsuit against Canada's three largest tobacco companies. 


Concordia fined $2 million

New Concordia building

Concordia University is being penalized by Quebec's Education Ministry for excessive spending on severance packages for top administrators.

In a letter dated yesterday to the chair of Concordia's Board of Directors and obtained by CJAD News, Education Minister Line Beauchamp says she is fining Concordia $2 million, that'll come out of the school's funding.


CSU presidential candidate disqualified

Concordia Student Union presidential candidate Schubert Laforest has been disqualified from the elections for not being a registered student

Candidate Lucia Gallardo who is also of the A Better Concordia team was also disqualified.

They responded to the disqualification Sunday by releasing a statement denying the allegations. They also attached their MyConcordia class schedules to prove that they are registered.

If Laforest is not reinstated Melanie Hotchkiss of the Concordia Could Be team will run unopposed.

Rare solar storm hits Earth

One of the most powerful solar storms in years left its mark on Earth on Thursday morning.

According to the Globe and Mail there has been no evidence of problems with power grids and satellites thus far.

A scientist from the NOAA forecast center stated that a solar storms potential to interfere with technology cannot be ignored.

It has the potential to interfere with Earth technology through magnetic, radio and radiation waves.

Apple reveals new IPad

iPad in Hawaii

Apple's new IPad has finally been revealed.

According to the BBC, Apple announced on Wednesday the release of their third IPad which Cheif Executive Tim Cook called redefining the category the company created.
