Tune in to Shibuya Crossing today, June 5th, as Montreal-based DJ Kazuki Koga joins us in conversation to talk about music, the city, his interests, and more - as the annual Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival continues to roll, where he will be performing with FLUCT, Ylang Ylang & Cosi e Cosi, Nothinge, & Ssurfacing this Friday June 10th at La Vitrola.
Hailing from Fukuoka in Southern Japan, Kazuki Koga is a Japanese musician who entered the world of electronic music back in 2009 after DJing at various clubs. Formerly active in Japan's Nu Metal scene, his adventures in electronica are very intense, emotional, and experimental, blending in the traditional rhythm while diving deep into the world of the unknown and unpredictable. You can experience such surreal ambience when you listen to available on his his latest release - The Salathé Wall in late 2015.
DJ Kazuki Koga is just one of the many musicians you will hear as our Third Season - and our entire series run here on CJLO enters into the final stretch - the final episode of this program happening in late July. Now is your chance to wake up to the rhythm of the Sound of Japan every Sunday morning as we have tons of sonic goodies, stories, and reflections to share - you definitely won't want to miss this adventure and many more coming to you right here on Shibuya Crossing - live every Sunday morning from 10 to Noon on 1690 AM in Montreal and on CJLO.com, and on demand at CJLO.com/shibuya!
As for Shibuya Crossing's Suoni coverage, stay tuned, as we will continue to cover the festival, including our own co-presentation show- Tashi Wada, Yoshi Wada, and Julia Holter + Tashi Dorji & Mette Rasmussen Duo- June 17th at Sala Rossa (4848 St Laurent)! #CJLOxSuoni
Michigan based post-industrial, noise juggernauts Wolf Eyes perform at Sala Rosa TONIGHT, June 4th, alongside local acts No Negative, blankets and Urplapse as part of Suoni Per Il Popolo's kick-off weekend- CJLO's Impossible Music is stoked to co-present! Over their 20 year long career and dizzyingly versatile discography, Wolf Eyes have managed to retain their signature sound while venturing into diverse generic forms. As journalist Marc Masters concedes you can hear the "dirge of Swans, the clang of Einsturzende Neubauten, and dark hardcore of the misfits" in the band's releases. Wolf Eyes exceptional collaborations with underground acts such as Purient, Black Dice, and Smegma prove that no matter what shade of dark you're into (Industrial, experimental noise, power electronics, drone or dark ambient) this performance will be of interest to you. Sala Rosa hosts the final date of an expansive European tour that promises to be a great exhibition of cacophonous, genre-breaking and transcendental soundscapes, alongside a local lineup that will demonstrate that Montreal's noise scene is as healthy as ever.
See you tonight at Sala (4848 St Laurent) and tune into Impossible Music every Sunday, 1-2pm!
Tune into Beat the World this Saturday @ 1:15pm as Sugarface Nene and Neil Lalla interview Willie Thrasher: a talented Canadian Inuit musician based in Nanaimo, B.C. where, when not playing festivals like Levitation Vancouver, he performs as a city sanctioned busker with his partner Linda Saddleback! Born in Aklavik, Northwest Territories, Thrasher was taken from his family at the age of five and sent to a residential school where he was forbidden to practice his Inuvialuit culture, a shameful initiative by the Canadian government to assimilate Indigenous people into mainstream society. Music was a way for Thrasher to escape the pain and longing, singing of his life, his people, and the environment.
Throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, Willie Thrasher travelled widely, sharing his music and meeting many other First Nations, Métis, and Inuit musicians. The CBC released Spirit Child, a compilation of Native music in 1981, a platform to share Willie Thrasher's artistry with a wider audience. The release of Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966-1985 (2014) brought Thrasher's work to recent international attention, allowing him to perform in festivals such as Austin Psychfest and his upcoming performance at Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival this Sunday June 5th at Sala Rossa- co-presented by CJLO's Beat the World.
Willie Thrasher will perform live with Linda Saddleback, Little Fire and with Sipreano along with a short film screening of "The Ballad of Crowfoot" by Willie Dunn at La Sala Rossa (4848 St Laurent) this year for Suoni Per Il Popolo -June 5th at 9pm! Tickets are $13 in advance and $16 at the door. For more information about the event and how to purchase tickets, click here!
Beat The World is the longest running world music radio show on CJLO. We focus on the beats, eats & culture from around the world! Listen live every Saturday 12pm-2pm E.S.T with hosts Kelly 'Sugarface Nene' & Neil 'Mr Lalla'.

Kicking off the summer season with a buzz, CJLO is honored and proud to once again cover and be part of the 2016 St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival happening throughout the month of June!
Our Official Fringe Team extraordinare is ready to capture the sights and sounds from the Montreal's annual party of fun, and to help you get revved up for this year's festival, we've put together a little compilation of fun picks that our esteemed fellow Fringe correspondents are looking forward to see:
"I'd love to check out the Atomic City because I'm thrilled by the idea of explosions and forbidden romance!" - Patricia Petit Liang (Fatal Attraction)
"Les Vieilles Croutes is sure to bring laughs and tears. Spliced in with vinegary French-Canadian humor is the painful reality that everyone does grow old, and oftentimes, one must do this alone." - DJ Thinkbox (The Machine Stops)
"So much to choose! So far, Nerdfucker is on my list for that slice-of-life vibe with a twist. Also, Messy Bitch is gonna be fierce and intense — the legendary Jacob Greco's Garbage Person Island, and the mystery play about The Lady and The Leg both sound like tons of fun!" - S. De Los Angeles (Shibuya Crossing)
"(The) Flinstones were a huge part of my childhood, and now the time has come to kill the things you love, Bedrock Burlesque is a top pick.- Danilo Bulatovic (Computer Sourire)
"Chanteuse, dancer, clown, and strip-teaseuse extraordinaire Miss Sugarpuss brings her final full-length play to the Fringe. Backed by an all-star artistic and technical team, it would be foolish to miss Love and Pasties, Miss S. I predict full houses, so get your tickets in advance! - Sue Snyder (CJLO Fringe Correspondent)
"Caravonica! I did a gig with him a few months ago and his performance was amazing! It was funny, creative, interesting, immersive and engaging. I loved it and am so excited to see him perform again!" - Erica Bridgeman (The F Hole)
"A David Lynch Wet Dream promises to bring all of the dark and surreal elements of a Lynch film to the stage. I cannot wait to be scared and seduced by these incredible performers at the Studio Multimédia du Conservatoire next week." - Sonja Hanson (Behind The Counter)
"I'm really excited to see Sexpectations by Moxy Scallywag. I am a hardcore fan of Moxy, AKA Maxine Segalowitz who is a magical performer that I saw last year in Team Greco's "Is this Pretentious?", in the Rocky Horror Picture Show at Mainline Theatre and in various dance productions in Festival Bouge D'Ici! Maxine symbolizes Fringe glamour: a mix of vaudevillian shenanigans with a dose of Riot Grrl grime!" - Ellen Smallwood (CJLO Promotions Director)
Our Fringe Team also gotten the chance to interview a ton of talented Fringe performers throughout the night of the Fringe-For-All. Yours truly, and Jess Glavina, the host of Creators Chorus, have put together a rich sound diary of conversations, observations - originally aired on Champions of The Local Scene. Check it out by clicking on the links below, and click here to check out the full playlist to learn more about our artists who will be featured on CJLO's Fringe Tunes in The Park - Friday June 17th!

The fine folks of "la ville aux cent clochers" are gearing up to celebrate 16 years of unexpected music with Suoni Per Il Popolo! The Montreal community-based festival starts this Thursday, June 2nd, and presents a wide variety of local and international musicians that span multiple styles including post-rock, experimental, drone, jazz, classical, and good ol' rock 'n' roll. The fest continues through until Sunday, June 19th.
Here's a quick look at five must-attend rock, punk, and metal events to whet your appetite, followed by a run-down of where you can party with CJLO 1690AM DJs and volunteers during the fest. Follow us @CJLO1690AM on Twitter and Instagram >> #CJLOxSuoni and we'll see you at the venues!
It is imperative that you start off your Suoni journey by catching Montreal's very own USA Out of Vietnam. This band has something for everyone with their musical melting pot of sludge metal, drone, prog, and grunge—to name but a few frames of reference for those obsessed with comparing the incomparably unique. Jean-Sebastien Audet opens the show with his lo-fi experimental R&B solo project, Un Blonde. That's quite the pairing! This promises to be fun.
New York, New York. The Big Apple. The birthplace of punk rock. The NYC Punk Showcase at Casa is the perfect event to catch if you're curious about what the kids are calling punk these days. With bands like Mommy to keep the spirit alive, we have it on good authority that punks not dead (yet).
Black-clad Stephen O'Malley and Sunn O))) are back in town to play another sold-out show for all you moody types. Harnessing the sounds of black metal, drone, and ambient doom, you'll really feel the rumble of the Universe deep inside the nether regions of your dark little soul. Acolytes Hissing, a relatively-new band from Seattle, are starting the night off right with their brand of panicked, black metal goodness. Yeah, this show is sold out, but keep an eye on your Facebook feed for that friend who suddenly can't make it and has a ticket to unload into your greedy little hands.
Fans of the whimsical and raunchy side of psychedelic-soul have waited with baited breath for the return of King Khan and the Shrines. Well, the future is in the near future! The band, fronted by the sometimes scantily-dressed but always flashy Arish Khan, is back to play the fest on June 14th with local garage rockers, The Letouts. Get ready to party to what I believe will be the raddest stand-out performance of the season.
Although you may not behold the personified storm winds of Greek legend with your eyes, you will certainly be carried away by the fiery howls and squeals of guitarist and vocalist Marissa Paternoster when Screaming Females hit the town on June 16th. The band played basement shows all over New Brunswick, New Jersey back in the day, only to find themselves working with the likes of Steve Albini on their break-out album, Ugly (Don Giovanni, 2012), and rocking out with bands like Dinosaur Jr and Garbage. Recommended for those who are into deliberate, brutal guitar solos and SST-era punk rock.
