Concert Reviews

The Soft Pack @ Green Room

Two weekends ago…

Saturday: Sleep in. Maybe too much. Work. Climb mountain at midnight, drink beer, call toll-free sex lines with friends from payphones and try to fake credit card numbers, but fail miserably. Get scared in a graveyard, go home. Sleep at 4:00 am.

Sunday: Work 11:30. Family dinner in Hudson. After hearing great reviews after its South by Southwest screening, boyfriend invites me to see Hot Tub Time Machine, and I’m all like “I totally want to see that, John Cusack is, like, the man of my dreams, oh my God, High Fidelity is the best LOL!”

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club @ La Tulipe

What a day April 2nd was: it went up to 27 degrees.  So needless to say, I did not at all feel like being inside on any level.

When I managed to come out of my summer-like tizzy… I remembered that I had the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club concert to go to and off to La Tulipe I went. I so did not feel like being inside, but I do love listening to this band, so I made the ultimate sacrifice of leaving the most amazing weather ever for that time of year and was I ever thankful that I did.

Protest The Hero @ Le National

One of my greatest concert regrets is that I've never seen Monster Magnet live.  Also, I'm sad that I didn't catch a tour that came close to me featuring Soilwork, Devildriver, Lamb of God, and a then-non-emo Killswitch Engage.  We all have live music dreams that are unfulfilled.  Without them, what would be the point of getting excited to see anything live?  Well, this past week, I was able to scratch one of my concert "To Do"s off my list. I finally got to see Protest the Hero.

Henry Rollins @ Le National

The longest relationship I have been in to this day has been only 16 months and that is being generous. I believe punk rock to be my first love, my family to be my undying love and strength and Henry Rollins to be my future husband.

RJD2 @ La Tulipe

On Wednesday March 10 Ramble John "RJ" Krohn, aka RJD2 graced a packed house with some of his latest and greatest.  The Montreal stop of his tour to promote his new album Colussus touched down at La Tulipe, a great local venue, one of my personal favourites.  Opening act, NYC's Break Science warmed up the crowd with their unique blend of live hip hop and dubstep remixes.

Pierced Arrows @ Green Room

My walk to "Le Salon Vert” was an interesting one.

Walking on upper St. Laurent, being distracted by all the really cheap Indian restaurants, my senses were cut off by a mass group of interesting people gathered outside a gallery exploding with indie music and laser lights. For a brief moment I thought to myself that this concert might actually be pretty exciting, with all the glimmer and interesting-looking people.

The Residents @ Club Soda

Who are the Residents? Except for those close to band, no one really knows. To be honest, I’m not sure I ever want to find out.

Since 1969, the Residents have been performing their unique brand of avant-garde (a fancy term for weird-ass) music and visual art. All the while, the members of the band have been concealed by costumes and masks. The most famous of these costumes being giant eyeball heads, top hats and tuxedos.

Peaches and Amanda Blank

PEACHES and I Feel CREAM in my pants:

After a long day at the office, I was on my way to meet my lady friend Daphne for a night of “the teaches of” the foul-mouthed, feminist, electro-clash, costume changing, shock rapper-rocker, Peaches.

The XX and Friendly Fires

If anyone needed proof that Britain’s The XX are a full-blown phenomenon at this point, they’d do well to have attended their debut performance in Montreal, opening for labelmates and fellow Britishers Friendly Fires.
