Magnotta spotted in Paris

Luka-Rocco-Magnotta-via-AFP-397x345The suspect in the dismembering case that’s shocking people worldwide may have been spotted in a Paris district over the weekend.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, twenty-nine years old, is at the center of a global manhunt for the murder and dismemberment of Jun Lin, an international exchange student at Concordia.

Brigitte Kuster, mayor of the district, told CBC News that Magnotta has been spotted by many people at a hotel and on the terrace of a local café.

Lin was killed sometime between the evening of May 24 and early May 25, because a video that apparently captures some of the act was posted on an online gore site on May 25.

His foot and hand were sent by mail to the federal Liberal and Conservative parties in Ottawa.

His torso was found in a suitcase in a trash pile behind the suspect’s apartment.

Magnotta, a man from Montreal nicknamed “the Butcher of Montreal”, apparently left the city on May 26th and arrived in Paris on the same day.

Interpol is actively searching for the man and issued a notice about him to a hundred and ninety countries last Thursday.

Evidence was gathered in the French café and hotel where Magnotta has reportedly been spotted.

Pictures posted on Interpol’s wanted-person site on Sunday show a man with dark hair and a black Mickey Mouse shirt believed to be Magnotta passing through security at an airport.

Police are looking into the alleged sightings but have no additional details.

Parlovr - Kook Soul

"Kook Soul" by Parlovr makes me wish I already knew the words to every song. The album sounds like loud and cheerful catharsis wrapped up into neat 2-to-3 minute packages. Sweet, upbeat sing-a-longs build and break into shrieking wails, with a tempo that is always energetic even when it's somewhat restrained. Tracks like "Fisticuffs and Affidavits" and "Amaze-Me-Jane" sound perfectly fitted to dance, jump and scream to. Each track has an individual power and demands it's own attention. "Kook Soul" on a whole is solid, invigorating and oh-so-much fun.

Negotiations hit an impasse

Negotiations between student union leaders and the provincial Liberals are at a standstill.

In a report by the CBC, the government pulled out of negotiations session on Thursday afternoon after both appear to have hit an impasse.

FEUQ president Martine Desjardins said the government didn’t fully evaluate the students’ proposal and was sticking to its proposal. The Liberals offered to lower tuition hikes from two-hundred fifty four dollars to two hundred nineteen dollars a year over seven years.

CLASSE spokesman Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois called for renewed protests to denounce the government.

Public protests against tuition hikes and Bill 78 have taken over Montreal, Quebec City and most recently other Quebec communities.

PS I Love You - Death Dreams

After making waves with 2010’s Meet Me at the Muster Station, PS I Love You’s sophomore release Death Dreams is a heaping slab of CanRock heaviness and the sound of an immensely talented duo hitting their proverbial stride. Like their hometown forerunners the Inbreds, Kingstonians Paul Saulnier (guitar/vocals) and Benjamin Nelson (drums) manage to mold a singular sound out of the limitations of a two-piece rock outfit. Where they diverge with their minimalist 90s predecessors is in overall approach; as Death Dreams’ 11 tracks can attest, this record is all-caps HUGE. Saulnier takes virtuosic turns in his guitar playing, from the feedback squalls of the titular instrumental tracks to the soaring, fuzzed-up riffage of album-closing “First Contact”. Where Death Dreams ends up in the pantheon of great Canadian rock remains to be seen but, apart from a clunker or two, PS I Love You have crafted an record with all the markings of a stone cold classic.

Teen Daze - All of Us, Together

Teen Daze

The first full full length LP from BC's Teen Daze finds the genre-hopping bedroom auteur expanding upon the homespun “ambient dancefloor” aesthetic he has been refining since emerging from the primordial ooze of chillwave all the way back in 2010. All of Us, Together is a largely instrumental affair, packed with four-on-the-floor jams meant to enhance the late night drives and popsicle-eating get-togethers that fill our collective summer idyll. This is “moment music” - euphoric, saccharine background noise demanding little in the way of active listening apart from a tapping toe or bobbing head. And - sometimes - that’s enough.
