Omar Sonics - Top Picks for POP Montreal 2012

OmarSo besides telling you to check out my buddies in Echo Beach (swirly, drugged out synth sounds w/ loops and ghostly vocals) @ Royal Phoenix on Thursday, and Young Lungs (buzzy post-punk garage pop) with Kestrels (exhilarating shoegaze guitar rock revivalists) @ Barfly on Friday, here are some of what I think are the best picks for you to catch at this year's POP Montreal festivities.

Countdown to Pop Montreal 2012

CJLO's Brian H from Countdown to Armageddon (Mondays 8-10 pm) has different plans during Pop Montreal this year. Here is his day-to-day breakdown of what's happening during the five-day music festival...

WEDNESDAY

I Am Living in Fattal

I moved out of the plateau to get out of the bullshit frosh celebrations that McGill kids hold dear to them as the "best week of their lives". I'm also in a band, so we had to find a way to live and play loud music without disturbing anybody.  Put those two stipulations into priority, and you'll probably end up in St Henri like I have.

Hillside Festival 2012

Hillside Fesitval

For three days in July, the Hillside Festival made its home in the picturesque Guelph Lake Island conservation. There could not have been a better weekend for the sold-out crowd of music lovers attending the 29th edition of the festival! Everything was well-organized, and there was plenty of water to counter the extreme heat and lack of Wi-Fi. With no rain or bad vibes to dampen the mood, Hillside almost felt like nirvana.

Osheaga 2012 - Day Three

Aloe Blacc

In spite of the rain, the final day at Osheaga was certainly the best day of the festival! First up was the soulful Aloe Blacc. He performed tracks from his album Good Things, including "Green "Lights" and "I Need Dollar." Even though he only had 40 minutes, Aloe really put on a good show and left a strong impression on me. The best part was when he sang "You Make Me Smile," which had everyone in the crowd give their friends a hug.

Osheaga 2012 Festival Preview

Osheaga 2012

The Osheaga Music & Arts Festival begins this Friday, August 3 at Parc Jean Drapeau, and lasts throughout the weekend! I'm very excited to be attending not only because it's my first time, but because there are quite a few acts I'm looking forward to seeing.

Montreal Jazz Festival 2012 Recap

A few weeks back I gave you a list of my picks for the Montreal Jazz Festival, and I managed to go to about 90% of the shows on that list. Here's a quick recap for those of you who missed them.

FREE SHOWS

Heavy Soundz
The Savoy, July 1-4

Maximum RNR

It took well over a month, but our DJs, journalists, and editors at CJLO have finally recovered from the rocking party that was Pouzza Fest back in May. The festival's second installment brought us so many awesome Canadian musicians including Billy the Kid and Jah Cutta, and sick bands like Metalian, Junior Battles, The Snips, and Low Dead Volume—just to name a few.

Best of Spring 2012

Spring Sunset

CJLO staff and on-air personalities take a look back at their favourites in music this past spring, and give us a taste of what's to come in summer 2012!
