“It was ok” is a self-produced stand-up special, originally released independently by David Heti, and now available through Stand Up! Records. It is available as an audio recording and also with video; the special was filmed in front of a live audience at Grumpy’s here in Montreal, that fact alone makes me counsel you to buy it. It is also quite funny.
Heti studied law and philosophy at McGill in Montreal, and simultaneously began his stand-up career. After graduating he went on to work for the Department of Justice Canada, where he was eventually forced to choose between law and comedy, since it is apparently un-ethical to do both. On his website he lists reviews he has received thus far from various publications for his stand-up work; he includes a memo from the Department of Justice Canada outlining their concerns that his stand-up "fails to meet the values and ethics code for the public service."
Of course, David Heti's humour might be more extreme than most. He is often called a dark comic, however I think it is more accurate to describe him as a somewhat heartless comic. His jokes are very intellectual. They are smart, well crafted, and often hilarious, but it is primarily a comedy of ideas, not of heart or feeling. Not that I am trying to discourage you from watching. Quite the contrary, I think everyone could do with a little Heti in their lives, if only to see how they react. His is the kind of comedy that will have you releasing deep, guttural, belly laughs at a joke that you feel you maybe shouldn't be laughing at, only later to find yourself horrified at a punchline that you may find genuinely mean.
David Heti reminds me of a trickster character in Indigenous mythology, such as Raven from West Coast traditions, Nanabush from Anishinabe stories, or the left handed twin from the Haudenosaunee creation myth. These societies recognized that we need people to 'cross the line', so that we can be more aware of where the line actually is. Some stories exist to teach us what not to do, or what not to say. At one point in the show, Heti states “unfortunately, this is the persona with which I am forced to continue”; it is an important line to keep in mind when watching David Heti. He is not the kind of comic who is trying to 'be himself' or share his life's wisdom. These are simply jokes, and David Heti is willing to go wherever he has to, if he thinks he will get a laugh. He quite often does.
His is a great special to watch either by yourself at the end of a bad day that made you hate everyone, or with a group of old friends, people with whom one is comfortable admitting that there is a little bit of a bad person deep inside of all of us.

A recent online poll paid by the Canadian Women’s Foundation has found that most Canadians know very little about sexual consent.
According to CTV News, the online poll had a sample of 1,500 Canadians - and although 96% of them believed that sex should always be consensual, 67% had poor knowledge about the definition of sexual consent.
One in 10 Canadians didn't know or believe that consent is required between long-time partners, and only one third knew that consent can be revoked during a sexual encounter.
These poll findings were released to coincide with the Canadian Women’s Foundation’s annual Campaign to End Violence, which will run throughout the entire month of May.

A young Montrealer is crying foul for unwanted police brutality.
In a report by C-B-C News, Xavier Amodeo [ZAY-vier / Ahmoh-day-yoh] says Montreal Police beat him up during last Friday's anti-austerity demonstrations.
An online video uploaded by an eyewitness shows the 20-year-old peacefully walking towards the protest happening downtown before three officers surround him, grapple his arms, and repeatedly punch his face.
S-P-V-M Commander Ian Lafrenière says the force has the right to use such force while making an arrest in certain situations.
He adds that it is too soon to decide whether the officers should be disciplined based on the video alone, and that he would like to get more information about what happened.
An investigation regarding the incident is underway.

There is something to be said about our culture being addicted to true stories. Especially when they involve scandals and murders. From Dateline NBC, Nancy Grace and most recently The Jinx: The Life And Deaths of Robert Durst. There are also the made for TV Movies that Lifetime produces. Even though True Story would have been great as a Lifetime movie of the month, it is on the big screen. The film stars Jonah Hill (Superbad, Moneyball, The Wolf of Wall Street) and James Franco (This is The End, 127 Hours, Spring Breakers, Instagram feeds), as well It is the Directorial Debut for Rupert Goold for this true story.
Based on a true story, the films opens up with booth characters at their low points in life. Christian Longo (James Franco) is on the run from the law, is then captured and put in police custody. Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill) is a New Yorks Times reporter that has written an article, which the truth of the story is called into question, because Finkel has created a fabricated story. He is than fired from his job and decides to take some time off to find himself. He finds himself and his next story about a prisoner who has taken on his identity, Michael Finkel AKA Christian Longo. This is when these two men meet and Michael Finkel decides to write Christian Longo's story. As much as the story wants to be the whole truth, Longo sets up Finkel in an emotional game of web of lies. There are many versions to the story of Longo's murders pre-trial, trail and post trail. When the film concludes we have a sense of what to believe and what has been fabricated in a powerful final confrontation between Finkel and Longo. Some audience members might be left to question what if Finkel's judgement about Longo is wrong, because after all Finkel has embellished stories in the past.
Now for the hard hitting truth after the evidence has been presented. Rupert Goold directorial debut plays more like a Lifetime movie of the month, seen on the big screen due to it's Hollywood actors. Some of the camera work is jarring due to a shaky cam aesthetic that Paul Greengrass is known for in his movies. Yes it gives a somewhat atmospheric sense of reality but this is not a true story of a plane or boat hijacking. There is no need for this camera work during a office meeting. James Franco eases himself into the role of Christian Longo because for Franco, playing another shady character is a leisure stroll in the park. As for Jonah Hill taking on the dramatic roll, he tries his best to be the serious reporter instead of the funny character, but overkills some of the scenes with over dramatizations of physical outbursts, that accompany his fake glasses.
2 Fake Jonah Hill Glasses/ 5 Shady James Franco Characters.

Imagine receiving an inspirational letter from John Lennon later on in life. This is what happened to Steve Tilston, and it is the basic premise for the drama comedy Danny Collins. Instead of being the general audience film, it takes risks with it's 13 + rating. The film stars Al Pacino (The Godfather Trilogy, Scarface, Scent of a Women), Christopher Plummer (Beginners, The Last Station), Annette Bening (American Beauty, The Kids Are All Right), Jennifer Gardner (Alias, Dallas Buyers Club) and Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire, Blue Jasmine). The film is directed by writer Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love).
The films opens up as a younger Danny Collins is giving a candid interview. Present day Danny Collins (Pacino) is a pop balled showman man, who has the hit songs that everybody loves. Also there seems to be an endless greatest hits tour and the second volume of the greatest hits are coming out on CD. Collins is a sad musician who has not written a hit song since the candid interview days and lives his life in excess with drugs and alcohol. His agent (Plummer) gets him the most awesome birthday gift ever, an inspirational letter from John Lennon telling Collins to stay true to himself and his music. Having had enough with his life in general Danny Collins hits the road in order to change his life. At the hotel where he checks in indefinitely he meets the manager of the hotel, Mary Sinclair (Bening), who he flirts with at every opportunity he gets. He also has to make amends with his distant long lost son (Cannacavale) and his sons wife (Gardner). Along the way Collins sees how you actions actions effect other peoples lives. There are also ample opportunities where Collins must chose between his old ways, or the new ways.
Danny Collins is not you average feel good comedy drama, where characters are turning a new leaf and learning life lessons. The choice to make this a 13+ film sets it apart from the generic life changing movies. This is quite surprising given the fact that Dan Fogelman has worked on a verity of Disney Animations films. Through Crazy, Stupid, Love was a great success as fresh romantic comedy for Fogelman as a writer. The supporting actors and actress are all great. As for Al Pacino, there is no praise that underscore what a great performance, if now on of his best roles in recent years. He is a great showman, and also has some great vivacity for life that the movie exemplifies. From putting on a concert Rod Stewart style, to the ladies man with game that Ryan Gosling would bow down too.
